You guys are making me care about playing FF3 and DQ3, although I'd prefer the PSP version of FF3 and the GBC version of DQ3 over their Famicom originals. My personal favorite RPGs on NES would be: Granted those are action-RPGs not turn-based. I enjoyed DQ4 a lot but that was via the DS version.

I'd probably roll with the SFC version of Dragon Quest III. As for FFIII... there are actual advantages to the NES version, too. They made a few changes to the class system in the remake to try to diversify it a bit. The original, you basically wanted to roll with Ninjas and Sages. The remake still ends up pigeonholing you a bit since it takes longer to get classes up to snuff, at least from my memory. You could pretty rapidly change classes without much penalty in the Famicom version.

I think the FF3 Pixel Remaster is probably the best version - it's not hideous like the DS/PSP version, and runs faster than it too, while also retaining the balance of the FC original.

Oh, right, I completely forgot about those. That does seem like the ideal way. Although I really did enjoy the remake when I played through on DS.

Sarge good point about the SFC version of DQ3. Somehow I forgot about that version. Yes that's the one I'll play. I don't think the PSP version of FF3 looks "hideous" at all. I think it looks quite nice actually. But if one doesn't like 3D graphics, sure the "Pixel Remaster" version is adequate. Although the PSP version has a lot of extra content, even stuff that's not in the DS original 3D version.

Ha, I missed that shot at the DS/PSP version. I think they look fine - I kinda like the PSX-era graphics. I enjoyed the FFIV remake on DS, too. But I definitely get how subjective tastes run on that front!

I've played through the DS and PSP versions of FF3 twice each - and I do think they're hideous lol. The PSP version is at least a little sharper, but the art is ugly. They did better with that type of graphical style on the actual Playstation, imo. Even on PC, where the visuals are very uprezzed, the art still looks bad. I haven't played the 3D remake of FF4 since DS, though, since I'm not a huge fan of that game in any version to begin with, so I dunno if that one has aged better.

I've got a nostalgic fondness for 5th gen 3D graphics, which is the aesthetic the FF3/FF4 DS/PSP remakes use. Not that I don't appreciate 2D graphics of course. I do come across lots of folks who think 5th gen 3D is disgusting though, fair enough.

Whenever I play a remake first I get an instant urge to play the original. So now I always start with originals and work my way forward.
Play Mother, folx.

I should get back to that - I had a run going on a repro cart I made back in the day, but lost the save.
