anayo : Have you played Doom's episode 4 before? Since I know that one was a later release back in the day, with the Ultimate package. The first few levels are by far some of the most diabolical maps from Romero. But I think the difficulty eases up the further you get. You should check out his new Sigil episode afterwards someday. I was surprised to hear it's being added to the Switch release alongside Plutonia and TNT. He must have struck a deal with Bethseda or something, so ... Sigil is kind of the official episode 5 now!

Thanks for the reminder! I saw a headline about this on Kotaku and Destructoid, reminding me that I downloaded the WAD for Sigil when it became available. Also, a few years ago I stockpiled as many fan-made Doom WADs and mods as I could find on the Internet. I'm pretty sure some of them require a modern engine like Z-Doom but at least a few ought to run on mid-90's hardware. I will try dig through my digital archives and find out.

I'm about 75% through episode 4 of Ultimate Doom and it just occurred to me that I think Doom is to Duke 3D as Street Fighter II is to Mortal Kombat.

Mechanical perfection vs a bit style over substance? Though... that wouldn't add up for me, since I like DN3D, but am not huge on both SF and MK (bigger fan of 3D fighters). For me Doom destroys all three of those franchises with their full combined power.

Some people really like Mortal Kombat for its atmosphere, a sentiment that could also be extended to Duke 3D. But every time I play Doom I'm just taken aback by how much of a well-oiled machine it is. I almost feel like Duke 3D has to be so much of a smart alech cause it just doesn't handle as well as Doom.

Some day I will finish D3D so I can compare. I just know that I think the original Doom is fantastic.

I beat Ultimate Doom and started playing Warcraft 2 Battle.Net Edition. This game is the perfect sort of nostalgic experience because I never played this as a kid, so I am experiencing it for the first time, but it's still similar enough to stuff from that era that I feel as ought to have experienced it before. I sure remember when RTS'es on PC were a really big deal. So far WC2 seems mechanically identical to Dune: Battle for Arrakis (Sega Genesis, beat it in 2018), but I find the swords and sorcery setting to be way more charming. Not to mention it controls much more nicely with a keyboard and mouse.

Seems like MOBA's killed RTS's. I still want to get the "remastered" Starcraft and run through those campaigns again someday for old times. Warcraft 2 and Diablo 2 also hold up fairly nicely as well. Love the music from that era too.
I put an hour into Tron Bonne this morning and it's great. I don't think I'll like it as much as the two Legends games, I like how those are open adventures and more about exploring. But this is a nice little detour and so far I like a few of the mission types I've done. The greater emphasis on these Servebots definitely makes me think of something as I enjoy looking over their stats, skills, send some to scout out areas... I get flashbacks:
Anyways, I also saw Mike Matei streaming Mega Man X7 recently and this part, that is apparently legendary for all the wrong reasons. I am going to live my life believing that not a SINGLE Mega Man Legends / Tron Bonne staffer had anything to do with X7. It makes no sense how they made three excellent 3D Mega Man's on the PSX and then Capcom cooked up this turd for the PS2.
Can you get through this without laughing? Or crying in pain?

It just goes to show that playing voice clips for every single attack is a really dumb idea. "Burn to the ground! Burn to the ground! Burn to the ground! Burn to the ground! BUUUUURN! BUUUUUURN! BUUUUUURN! Burn to the ground!Burn to the ground!Burn to the ground!" The world's most deranged person wouldn't sound as crazy in a fight.
