I really like the Game Boy Ninja Gaiden, even if it's a secret Shadow of the Ninja game. Actually, that's probably why I like it.
For the record, I think the NES Ninja Gaiden games are awesome. Granted, there was a time where I didn't like them very much, at least beyond a certain point. They're brutal. But once you get things down, there's a sort of flow that you get into that just doesn't get captured in other games.
I suspect I would have been able to beat the first game back in the day if I'd actually owned it, and not lost patience when getting sent all the way back to 6-1. Plus, the key would have just been getting to Jacquio with the somersault-slash attack. Many years later, though, I finally figured out the pattern to beating him, and without watching a YouTube video! What was killing me was that I would usually get whacked trying to jump and slash him off the pillars, and would inevitably eat a fireball or jump into him trying to deal damage. But there's a pattern where you dodge fireballs on the ground, then do a jump to the wall, and then smack him while flipping off the wall. Since you drop like a rock, you'll get your hit and be in a position to dodge quickly again.
NG2 is the easiest of the bunch, no question. I did run into issues at the end, but those ninja clones are just too exploitable. Strangely, it's also my least favorite. I'm not entirely sure why. It's not the challenge aspect; I enjoy both easy and hard games.
NG3 is perhaps my favorite, but it's also the absolute hardest. Ironically, the game was designed originally to be easier, but the US version was changed significantly to reduce power-ups, and worse, limited continues. Good luck with that! I beat it legit a few years back, after practicing quite a bit via save states. Compressing that learning curve helped tremendously. (That also helped me a ton in Battletoads, my white whale for many, many years.)
