Pepper II is awesome. I actually find it easier than Pac-Man as it's less claustrophobic. If things get dicey you can usually duck into another section of the maze.
Definitely check out Lady Bug if you want another solid maze take.
As far as Canyon Bomber goes... 1970s video games can be rough. Air-Sea Battle is no charmer either. The 2600 really took off in 1980; the first-party games got better alongside Activision hitting the scene.

The Saturn version of Die Hard Arcade had this '70s Sega game where you're bombing ships from a plane, I forget the title. Earning points in that game gave you extra credits for the main game. Canyon Bomber sounds like that.

There was a Sega game called Dive Bomber and then one literally just called Bomber.
Never played Die Hard tho.

I did end up trying Secret Quest. Interesting setup there - you can obviously see the Zelda inspiration, as well as Gauntlet elements with the depleting air supply.

I looked it up, the game is called Deep Scan. It was ported to the Atari 2600 as Sub-Scan. It's very archaic and basic, but it was kinda cool to play it for 5-6 minutes to try and earn enough extra credits to beat the game. Die Hard Arcade is great, by the way. Easily one of the best beat-'em-ups of the '90s, with more moves, more satisfying combat, and much more variety and better pacing in level design than the majority of 2D beat-'em-ups (it's divided into the shorter scenes rather than long repetitive levels).

I'll have to check out Lady Bug and Sub-Scan.
Agreed that Die Hard Arcade is one of the best beat 'em ups ever. I'd put it in the top 5.
Secret Quest is compelling and ambitious, but I think of it more as a third generation game. Due to when it released and its Zelda-inspired design. It's a weird outlier being on 2nd gen hardware but releasing in 3rd gen era.

Never played Deep Scan (Sub-Scan) but I have played Tac/Scan... You're not missing much there lol.
As far as late-era 2600 games go, Moto Rodeo, Sentinel, Xenophobe, Double Dunk, Ikari Warriors, Off the Wall, and Radar Lock were all 89/90. Those are just first-party releases; most of the third parties had bailed at that point.

Title: H.E.R.O.Platform: Atari 2600 Region release played: USA Year of release: 1984 Developer: Activision Publisher: Activision Graphics: 4/5 Audio: 3/5 Challenge: 4/5 Fun factor: 3/5 Quick Thoughts: H.E.R.O. stands for Helicopter Emergency Rescue Operation. The protagonist Roderick Hero has a helicopter pack, a face laser shooter, and a pile of dynamite. The helicopter is for navigating the perilous tunnels, laser for toasting dangerous creatures, and the dynamite is for clearing walls. This is all done in the name of rescuing lost miners through 20 challenging levels. H.E.R.O. is technically impressive, thoroughly challenging, and entirely unique. +Really impressive graphics for Atari 2600. +You can fly, shoot frickin' lasers and blow walls up (or yourself). +20 unique stages is a lotta content for an Atari 2600 game. +A wholly innovative game concept even today.
+Feels good to rescue those miners! -Flying is touchy and twitchy to control. -It's easy to blow yourself up when you land accidentally.
-You will often unfairly die for not knowing what's on the screen below. -Who goes into a cave to rescue people but doesn't bring a damn flashlight?! -Running out of dynamite at the end of a stage is game over, regardless of actual lives left. This player makes this tricky game look easy. I promise it's not. Ex's time to beat: 25 minutes Ex's rating: 7/10- That's gonna wrap this theme up for me, here's what I beat: Dig Dug | Atari 2600 (8/10) Fathom | Atari 2600 (5/10) H.E.R.O. | Atari 2600 (7/10)
Jungle | Hunt Atari 2600 (6/10)
Montezuma's | Revenge Atari 2600 (7/10) Ocean City | Defender Atari 2600 (5/10) Plaque Attack | Atari 2600 (4/10) I played wayyy more games than those, including some SG-1000, ColecoVision, and IntelliVision games. But those are the ones I "beat" as much as one can "beat" a 2nd gen game.

It was definitely not easy, but a very cool little game. I didn't beat it, but liked what I played of it.

Great to read about H.E.R.O.!
I still need to play the 2600 version; believe it or not I only own it on the SG-1000. Didn't realize how big/long it was.
