I beat Quake's main campaign and the Scourge of Armago expansion!
Overall, a fantastic experience. You can tell the original game was rushed, but that makes the game's aesthetics oddly cohesive. Everything feels very surreal and menacing. The gameplay, of course, is what you expect from a classic id Software game. Level design in Chapter 4 is as sadistic as I heard it is, but I made it through. The only real blemish is the final boss: the games never makes it clear how you kill it.
I was pleasantly surprised by Scourge of Armago. The developers built larger levels and did some neat environmental storytelling, a small preview of the evolution of the genre two years later.
The Switch port is excellent, but the bigger levels have slowdown. The Kex Engine and its fancy effects push the Switch's memory too much. Thankfully, you can turn off those effects to achieve a smooth framerate.

Spent some time with Assault Suits Leynos 2 for Saturn this evening. Accidentally invoked the HRG Effect™ with this one: www.gematsu.com/2023/09/assault-suit-leynos-2-saturn-tribute-announced-for-ps4-xbox-one-switch-and-pcwww.timeextension.com/news/2023/09/assault-suit-leynos-2-is-the-next-saturn-tribute-title"The next entry in the 'Saturn Tribute' series will be 1997's Assault Suit Leynos 2, publisher City Connection has revealed. Developed by NCS, the game is a direct sequel to the Genesis / Mega Drive game Assault Suit Leynos, which was released in the West under the title Target Earth. That game was later remastered by Dracue Co., Ltd in 2015. Both titles are part of the same series as Assault Suits Valken (also known as Cybernator). Assault Suit Leynos 2 has only ever been available on the Saturn and didn't get a release outside of its native Japan at the time. This new version will include save states and the ability to rewind gameplay."You know a game is legit hard when the key features of its re-release are save states and rewind. You can tell the original game was rushed Never seen that take with Quake before. What makes you believe the original Quake was rushed? I've never played Scourge of Armagon, nor any of Quake's expansions*. Reading up on Scourge, it does seem ambitious with a more traditional campaign structure. Xeogred or anayo may have beaten it before. *Expansions I know of:Abyss of Pandemonium Abyss of Pandemonium – The Final Mission Dimension of the Machine Dimension of the Past Dissolution of Eternity Scourge of Armagon

I enjoyed all the Quake 1 expansions quite a bit. They each had some of their own personality too, in level design, new weapons, new takes on the music, etc.
Quake 2's expansions on the other hand were a total bore and I won't ever play those again. I'm glad to hear the brand new 2023 one is awesome though and does things the original engine couldn't handle, like tons of enemies on screen. Think Digital Foundry noted it makes it feel more like Doom 2 in an awesome way.
