I can absolutely see how Sonic sold systems. It's stylish, fast, and has a ton of polish.
@opwuaioc: I don't think the voices completely ruined it for me (I actually like a few of them, like the Birdo audio clips), but it does get obnoxious for every single movement. I think it's because, if you look at Super Mario 64, there is less jumping overall in a 3D space, whereas the 2D games need for you to jump a lot. Or pick up stuff a lot. It's much more that loss of vertical screen space that hurts, but the horizontal scrolling is wonky as well. The vertical really impacts the last few levels; you literally can't see some of the platforms above you to jump to.

I can absolutely see how Sonic sold systems. It's stylish, fast, and has a ton of polish. I can too because I was alive when he was still a viable competitor to Nintendo. But I can also see how quaint his first game seems from a modern perspective (or even from the perspective of later Genesis titles.) It's weird to see Sonic from both perspectives at the same time. Another possibility is that while I still enjoy 16-bit gaming even though it's technologically outdated, my tastes for that era's games have changed since I was in grade school. Now I find myself gravitating toward 16-bit titles that are very difficult and take dozens of attempts to clear (such as Castlevania Bloodlines, Revenge of Shinobi, Thunder Force IV, etc.) But I was able to beat Sonic 1 in one go.

I can understand that for sure. A little bite to a game can be really awesome, as long as it's done in a fair way. It's why I still occasionally try to take down super tough games. I have to be in the right mood for it, though, and I'll often practice with save states.
I guess it's a little like me and the original Super Mario Bros. I've never been a huge fan of it, but it was absolutely a system seller. Sometimes it can be tough to put yourself back into the context in which a game was released. SMB3 still stands as a high water mark for the 2D games, in my opinion, though - it's actually amazing how much they built on that foundation.

Well, first adventure game на русском языке is down for the count, although this one is actually a well known game from Germany - the land of adventure games. Easy peasy, but see if you can guess it: Yeah, I literally had to attach my phone to a kitty cat with duct tape to eavesdrop on a conversation. You can tell the adventure game logic is strong with this one

It was OK. A light-hearted adventure with Indiana Jones-y vibes. The 'love story' was atrocious. It didn't make me question my own existence, so I don't have strong feelings about it. Obviously, now I'm playing the sequel because I gotta know whether Nina and Max are going to get back together. Yeah... I'll probably play something more serious next.

The Inside Story 15) Commander Keen Episode One: Marooned on Mars 16) Commander Keen Episode Two: The Earth Explodes! 17) (too new; don’t discuss on the retro forum until 2029) 18) Star Wars Episode One: Racer
In 1999 or 2000 I was visiting my cousin at his house when his parents bought him the Nintendo 64 version of Star Wars Episode One: Racer. I only beat the first race on Tattooine. The following stage was too difficult for me to progress any farther. But despite my limited exposure, the game sure made an impression on me. I mentally filed it away under "Definitely play this later." and remembered that resolution for 20 years.
When I found the PC version at a thrift store in 2020 I was apprehensive that 10 year old me was just easily wowed by a garbage movie license game, but I'm pleased to say that couldn't be farther from the truth. This game is awesome! You have to perform a juggling act between boosting - which makes you go faster but also makes it harder to steer - and bumping into walls, which accumulates damage on your pod. When your pod takes too much damage, you blow up. You respawn after a few seconds, but this is usually enough for the other racers to get ahead of you. The push and pull between boosting as much as possible while trying not to scrape the edges of the tracks proved to be so compelling.
The game's overall aesthetic really works for me, harkening to late 90's arcade racing game I may have seen in a shopping mall. Hydro Thunder definitely comes to mind. I loved Star Wars Episode One: Racer so much that I beat it in just a few days. I even intend to go back later and get 1st place in all the tracks and beat the 4 bonus stages.

I definitely remember it being quite well received back in the day, so no, your kid brain wasn't just wowed by licensed garbage.

A save-stated run of Streets of Rage 2 with Blaze last night. I'm just gonna say it, she's not very good in SoR2. Too many of her moves are hard to abuse, her jump kicks have crazy range but are terrible for hitting up close, her combos can break at times, that double-tap forward move is pretty bleh... I mean, she's not unplayable, but she's nowhere near the Axel/Max tier. Throw damage seems pretty good, though.
