And I just beat this one today! "DK Mania". The Mania in the title being an intentional nod to Sonic Mania. This is a fair, balanced, and polished rom hack from front to back. Some changes in the colors of enemies or environments along the way to spice it up too, even some music changes in some of the last levels. For whatever reason you have a constant maxed out 99 lives though. So it makes finding the KONG letters or animal gems kind of pointless to grab along the way, but it's second nature for me to grab anything I can along the way.
I'm not sure if people are still trying to crack DKC and break it up more, but you can tell there are some big limitations with editing. The water levels are unfortunately entirely unchanged, with the exception of some enemies maybe being moved around or changed to other types. They changed up the colors too so it's kind of fresh, but the level layouts are otherwise the same as the original. I speculate that the "size" of every level cannot be modified either, whatever the measured range is. I don't know if the background graphics/sprites can be moved much either. It did seem like some of the temple levels had new background placements though, but other than that I'm not sure. The jungle levels are changed up nicely and 80% of the levels in this whole hack flow differently with the new layouts, but you can tell they're having to work in the original confinements of the level size. If my rambling makes any sense.
Anyways, I can confidently recommend this one for DKC1 veterans wanting to go through it with a new take.
Few other romhacks I can highly recommend:
I know editing tools have been around since the late 90's for some of my favorites, like the Mega Man's, Super Metroid, and Link to the Past. But I still haven't really played anything of these that I walked away liking a lot or even finished. Super Metroid especially, more people are obsessed with going full Kaizo or then change up the physics which is wack. Maybe there's some cool romhacks for these nowadays though, I don't keep up with the scene much like I did ages ago.
Super Metroid Zero Mission - always looks like a safe bet, but the novelty probably wears off fast... and why not just play Zero Mission instead? lol

Played through Dynasty Wars, a weird sort of auto-scrolling brawler from Capcom based on the Tenchi wo Kurau (Three Kingdoms) universe. I can't say it does a whole lot for me - it's intense with all the enemies it throws at you, but combat is mostly unsatisfying, although catching a groove with your charge attack is fun. Still, lots of brawler-type games I'd rather play. This one gets a 5.5 from me.

The thing that was cool to me about Dynasty Wars was riding on horseback.

4th complete run of Dark Souls 1 is in the tank, via the PC "remastered" edition. 22h32m, even with the DLC haha. Got it down to a science now. I'm not even sure what compelled this replay (knowing Ex will play it soon I guess). Dark Souls 2-3 have been on my mind more since it's been longer since I played those. I played TWO full character runs of DS1 again in 2017 with a PC mod for the original version. Looks like I last played DS2 in 2015 and DS3 in 2016. But uhhh yeah, can't say no to DS1 either. Stone cold classic. I first beat Demon's Souls in 2012. I think 2013 and 2018 are the only years since then where I didn't play or replay one of the modern From Software games.

A 2D game Xeogred will infinitely replay? Mega Man. A 3D Xeogred will infinitely replay? Dark Souls.

I wager the Resident Evil's have my highest tally for 3D stuff. Used to get in the Metal Gear Solid's a lot too, but I space them out a bit more nowadays. I last played MGS2-MGS3 alongside Peace Walker whenever that PS3 HD collection came out.
But yeah... From Software is coming for Capcom.
I don't think I've ever done a full NG+ run of Dark Souls 1 though, but I did it for all the others to 100% them and get all the trophies. The Dark Souls 1 trophies are a bit more grindy, so even I have my limits on that even amongst my favorite games.
I might consider Dark Souls 1 soft-retired for now, or it'll just be way back in the From rotation now. Some of the others will be next but alas, Elden Ring is around the corner!
For the record, Demon's Souls still has my heart. I've beaten that one 3 times but one of those was a 74h 07m "platinum" run character that got up to like NG++++ or something. So I've probably over-played Demon's Souls and Dark Souls 1 about the same amount at this point, haha.

BTW, Tenchi wo Kurau is a manga based on the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, more specifically.

And why do I get the feeling Ex played at least one of the games, reviewed it and gave the game a bad rating?

I don't like any of the IGS beat-'em-ups (Taiwanese IGS, not the short-lived Japanese company). The levels go on forever and the combo systems just drag things down even further since a 20-hit combo is now basically equivalent to a 3-4 hit combo in traditional beat-'em-ups. They all remind me of Sengoku Denshou 3 in that way, which I hate.
