I'm not a big fan of DKC2 myself. It's decent enough, but for me, it's the first game that has all the magic. I agree with you wholeheartedly. You can tell Nintendo upper management backed off the sequel. (Gregg Mayles filled Miyamoto's producer role.) I really don't care for DKC2 at all, couldn't be bothered to finish it. It's just harder for the sake of being harder, without adding anything special or magnificent to compensate. - So tonight, in addition to what I'm already playing, I plan to give this a shot:

I put an hour into 2006's Destination: Treasure Island tonight, had good fun. Some screenshots:
This is a PC adventure game, designed by Kheops Studio. I've beaten a few of Kheops adventure games, their work is always highly decent. The plot of this adventure is as a fan fiction sequel to the original Treasure Island. The game starts off on a ship, which you escape while being chased by mutinous pirates, and then end up on a nearby tropical island. From that point on, you're chasing a treasure based off a cryptic riddle and a half torn map. You have to solve simple and complex object puzzles to succeed. So far the puzzles have been logical enough that I haven't needed a walkthrough. Good times so far. I'm certainly learning all about tying knots!

Took some time out to finish a "Summer Themed" arcade game today: It's 2003's Dolphin Blue!

Gamed my ass off today in arcade land, finished up another "Summer Themed" fit: It's 1994's Windjammers. Review here.

I put more time into DK: Jungle Climber on DS last night. The whole "Tropical Island" thing has given way to varying aesthetic choices. There's a total of six islands (worlds) with varying amounts of levels in each. Last night I completed the third island, which was okay except the boss of that world was an unbalanced mess. I was raging pretty hard because of that. The kid gloves definitely came off in island three. I'm hoping the next three islands are better balanced than it was. I will say this game's creativity level is often very high, lots of little innovative ideas introduced I've not seen in other Nintendo platformers. Still good stuff overall at this point.
I'm also still playing Dolphin Island: Underwater Adventures on DS, which I quite enjoy as it's relaxing and easy (good way to wind down after raging at Jungle Climber). But said game's too new to really talk about here. I'll just say it's a first person scuba diving sim where you help marine animals by doing Trauma Center type stuff to them, and sometimes help the environment by repairing underwater EPA disaster type stuff.

And I finished a "Tropical Theme" game for this event... DK: Jungle Climber. It started out good, fooled me at first, then went to crap. Oh well. Review's here.

I spent nearly four straight hours playing Destination: Treasure Island last night. This tropical island themed adventure-puzzle game has been a ton of fun. I'm now at the very end. I reached what must be the final puzzle last night, but by that point my brain was too exasperated from hours of prior puzzle solving to finish it. Hopefully I can solve the final (disingenuously difficult) puzzle and have this beaten tonight. I'm also still playing Dolphin Island: Underwater Adventures, and enjoying it quite a bit. I hope to finish ten games for my "Summer Themed" event. It won't be long before I have 6 finished so far.

So I spent my lunch break finishing Destination: Treasure Island. The review's right here matey. - I've got lots more candidates on the docket for this Summer Themed event. Want to know the next one? Well, it's a game that fits the "Bikini Theme". After all, what's summer without bikinis? A shitty summer, that's what.
So here's what's next... Yep, it's 2002's Bikini Karate Babes. My apologies in advance.

Well I put about 30 minutes into Bikini Karate Babes. It's just as terrible as you might imagine. Horrible fighting engine, awful OST, all art in the game sans the digitized actors is abysmal... just schlock city. The developers did manage to digitize the actors well into the game, with excellent animation. The hit boxes aren't too shabby either. But that's hardly a saving grace considering every other aspect of BKB is terrible. There's no single player campaign either, just a lame arcade mode. I couldn't even beat the arcade mode, because after a few fights the game would always crash out to Windows. Whatever, not missing much here, moving on.

Oh God, you are a braver man than I am. Or at least you've got a sturdier stomach. So... What's next on the, uh, menu for the bikini theme? I mean, there's Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball and Zombie Zone.
