imbibed with that colorful joie de vivre spirit such entries as Threads of Fate and Mega Man Legends exude. And that's why I'm so reluctant to try out the Zwei series even though it's available on GOG. Anyway, I'm not sure whether the PSP port of Revelations: Persona counts as a retro game yet since it came out in 2009. It probably added and changed some stuff, but I wouldn't call it a remake. In any case, that's the only Persona game I've beaten on the PSP and I really enjoyed it. Some people don't like how they changed the OST and made it sound a bit more... in line with P3. Some JPOP sounding tracks here and there. The combat is a bit like Koudelka: it's slow, tactical and grid-based. However, you can't move your characters during combat. I definitely prefer this combat system to what they did with Persona 2. I actually played Innocent Sin on the PSP but for some reason - maybe a bug - I stopped playing halfway in. About a year later, I started playing the translated PS1 rom which I've beaten. I've also played a good chunk of P3P. I was actually playing it in sync with P3FES because I couldn't choose one over the other. Then I realized the portable version was ridiculously easier in comparison and the VN-style made the conversations even less tolerable... so yeah.

I beat Zwei II last year (via GOG), and I loved it. That was the first Persona game I really tried to get into. For years I'd read how "amazing" P3P was, and it ended up being the Together Retro choice at Racketboy one month (I think it was last year actually). So I gave it a shot. I put about 14 hours or so into it before I couldn't take it anymore. The game's still too new to really go into deep detail about, but I'll just say the lame plot, lackluster presentation, terrible dungeons, and boring easy battles did nothing for me. I sure hope that Persona 4 is a big improvement (I own it on PS2 and the Golden Vita version).

So I think a post somewhere else disappeared, but yeah, the PSP version of Persona changed the soundtrack to more J-Pop stuff that fit the current style. Some folks liked the move, some didn't. I'm sure it also has a better localization; the original was pretty spotty in places. It also restores an alternate route through the game: the Snow Queen quest. This was locked off in the original localized version, since they didn't finish the hacking necessary there. I don't know how substantially those routes differ, but I've heard a fair amount, so it's probably not too different from how there were two different routes through Front Mission 3.

SargeIs there any particular reason you were so gung-ho about acquiring the original Revelations: Persona? Is the PSP version not the superior choice?

Yeah, it's called ruining your only original copy, part of that PSX RPG set I have. No way I was going to let that slide, even if the PSP version is objectively superior. Call it obsessive collection tendencies.

Call it obsessive collection tendencies. Obsessive I can understand. I've been known to replace a perfectly working disc just because I couldn't stand how many scratches it had. In the case of games I really love anyway.

You don't like a cute and colorful action-RPG once in a while? Err... Occasionally. I'll probably play them since they're from Nihon Falcom. Is anyone familiar with Coded Arms by Konami? I was pretty impressed by it. It really does first person shooting pretty well for an handheld game. I didn't finish it since it got a bit too repetitive for my taste after awhile, but I might go back to it eventually. I'm also very interested in playing the Ghost in the Shell (2005) game. Pretty much the only FPS's for the PSP I'm aware of other than MoH: Heroes and Call of Duty: Roads to Victory.

Coded Arms was only fun multiplayer IMO, I thought the single player was boring. I did enjoy its futuristic aesthetic though.
I'd like to try that PSP GiTS game someday, I'm a big fan of the franchise. Just haven't gotten around to the PSP one yet (I do have it loaded on my main PSP currently for what it's worth). That said, I did beat (and loved) the PS1 and PS2 GiTS games.
Other FPS on PSP besides the few you mentioned:
Brothers in Arms: D-Day Coded Arms: Contagion Medal of Honor Heroes 2 N.O.V.A. - Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance (PSN only) Star Wars: Battlefront II Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas
I have not played any those, so I can't recommend or not-recommend any of them.
I've played and beaten some good third person shooters on PSP. I'd recommend:
Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops Resistance: Retribution Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror The 3rd Birthday
There's a lot more third person shooters on PSP than that though. Killzone: Liberation and Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow were well reviewed for example.

Wanted to bump this thread. I'll go back and re-read some posts and lists. Have you guys discovered more PSP gems in the last two years or so? Are there various versions and ports of some games that are superior on the PSP?

Are there various versions and ports of some games that are superior on the PSP? Good questions, I'll have to get back to you myself about this later. But for now, your timing is good as PPSSPP just had a new version release: www.ppsspp.org/Version 1.11.1 was considered a big deal improvement across the board. Edit: It's been incremented again to 1.11.2, even better. Definitely a good choice for someone who wants to play PSP games like they are computer games, instead of portable games.
