I'd say it rests in the 8.5 range. That's the same score I'd give Faselei!. My one big complaint is that towards the end of the game, melee attacks take precedence. Meaning you'll have a much easier time using strong punches and such. That's not cool if you've been focusing on ranged attacks successfully up until that point. Minor complaint though in the grand scheme of how cool this little mecha SRPG is. The movement mechanics alone make it feel very different from how other strategy games work The only somewhat-of-an-analog I can think of is Carnage Heart, and a board game called Robo Rally. And yeah, Faselei!'s crazy expensive in English. Thankfully the ROM's easy to find, and easy to emulate.

This sounds like a cool event, and I've always been interested the Shadow Hearts series. I've never played any of them, so I'll probably be taking a shot at Koudelka. It sounds like the completion time is pretty manageable, although where it comes to JRPGs for whatever reason I often need to figure my own playtime at ~1.5 X HLTB estimates (same goes for FPS which is even more baffling). What can I say, I'm a grind-a-holic! Still even at ~20 hours, Koudelka seems like it would be more than manageable.
Question for anyone who might be in the know; will Koudelka run sufficiently on PSP? Are there any controller mapping problems and/or disc swap issues? For the most part these days, I heavily favor portable gaming for most JRPGs if I want to have any shot at completion. In the case of PS1, this typically means converting PS1 ISOs to EBOOT and loading them up on the PSP. Typically this works pretty well, but there are some notable outliers.

I think the last time I checked, I got some weird issues with Koudelka and my EBOOTs. I think I had to mess around with different versions of the PopStation loader to get it to play nice. I'm also not sure if you can merge all the discs into one EBOOT or not. I need to look into that, actually. I only have a single disc on my PSP right now, and I'm trying to remember if it gives you a save prompt before you have to swap discs. I suspect so, if I only did a single-disc EBOOT.
EDIT: Ah, if you're on 6.60, I think you may be just fine according to one source.

I haven't played Koudelka on PSP, but I've read it works well as an eBoot with POPSLoader V3.52. I doubt you'll have any issues with no L2/R2 buttons on the PSP. IIRC those two buttons just controlled camera zoom. The game lets you remap controls if you want (so does POPSLoader for that matter). Yeah, that list (or another source for it) was where I saw the update that says 6.60 seems to work fine now for a multi-disc EBOOT. I used to pore over those lists when I was making all my EBOOTs. Those early days required quite a few workarounds.

What kind of specs does your laptop have? PSX has been pretty fast for some time, unless you're running something older than the Pentium III/IV era. My laptop is like 5-7 years old, and it struggles sometimes to run flash games off of a web browser.

Yeah, that, or even ePSXe would probably run fine. I mean, my laptop is eight years old. And I was emulating PlayStation stuff way back on my laptop that was 15 years old, so I'd be shocked if you couldn't run them in some capacity.
I would also note that the original XBOX ran PCSX pretty well, and that's only a Pentium III @ 733 MHz and a GeForce 2/3 hybrid. Really, really old tech.

Well guys & gals I have to say; I was initially a bit hesitant about jumping into Koudelka immediately after finishing Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribulations. Typically I'd throw in at least one action/reflex based game between steadfastly paced/'cerebral' type games. Or put another way I'd typically run through at least one 'short-form' game before diving into another 'long-form' game. But after all our JRPG discussion over in the JRPG story thread, I think my appetite has been sufficiently whetted for a nice JRPG experience! I'm really looking forward to getting into this series for which I only have passing familiarity.
