I think Blockbuster might have had a special deal with Interplay regarding ClayFighter, but don't quote me on that. I remember seeing posters and demo games in video stores, as well. They really pushed that damn game. I thought that mean snowman was badass:D , though in retrospect, "Bad Mr. Frosty" is a really stupid name.
You know what would be cool, if at least half-ironically? A KoF-style crossover of all those crappy, mostly digitized, non-MK attitude fighters. Throw in the guys from Pit Fighters to round up the roster, because that's another garbage game I liked at the time. It'd be good for a laugh, anyway.

You're not wrong, the revamped version of the N64 game, "Scupltors Cut" was some exclusive release from them:
So perhaps they had some other deals or connections with Interplay prior to that, because yeah even the SNES games seemed heavily featured and stocked.
This is sad but cracks me up and is so 90's: Blockbuster failing to take care of even a special exclusive release of theirs. (to be fair renters probably treated the stuff like crap anyways)

I think all these hack job Vs Fighters say a lot about how big the genre was back then. It's not like we haven't seen any new fighters lately, and most of the stalwarts have lasted into the present day, but it's nowhere close to the craze that it was 25 years ago.

Speaking of digitized fighters, Scarab's Battle Monsters for Saturn would be a nice October choice haha.
I will write a better response later, but here is just a list of some of the fighting games my brother and I have probably spent the most time playing against each other (in no particular order):
SNK: The King of Fighters 99 Dream Match (the Dreamcast version of KoF '98, but really, we've played a ton of other KoF games as well) Real Bout Fatal Fury 2: The Newcomers (usually played NGCD version until the PS2 version) Garou: Mark of the Wolves (usually played the Dreamcast version until the PS2 version) Last Blade 2 (usually played the Dreamcast version until the PS2 version)
ADK: World Heroes Perfect (usually played the Japanese Saturn version until the PS2 version)
Capcom: JoJo's Bizzare Adventure (Dreamcast and PS1 versions) Street Fighter 3 (all 3 iterations) Vampire Savior (but Nightwarriors has also seen a decent amount of play) Capcom vs SNK 2 (usually PS2 version) Power Stone 1 and 2 (Dreamcast) Project Justice (Dreamcast) Final Fight Revenge (Saturn version)
Other: Astra Superstars (Saturn version) Slap Happy Rhythm Busters (PS1) Guilty Gear (PS1)
As for why these particular games, I will explain in a later post when I have more time.

Slap Happy Rhythm Busters (PS1) I'm glad to see a mention of this game on HRG. Along with Rakugaki Showtime, Slap Happy Rhythm Busters is also a real hidden gem of a fighting game often ignored on PS1. It's got very competent cell shaded graphics, lots of creativity in its character designs, and a unique sense of style. Fun fighter.

Normally I would've ignored it based on the name, but it seems really cool. Same kind of Japanese hip-hop / graffiti-influenced look as Jet Set Radio - it's wild that both games came out the same day.

The way I learned of Slap Happy Rhythm Busters was through another fighting game developed by Polygon Magic on PS1: Vs. I was trying to find more info about Vs. one day (another game my brother and I would play) which eventually led to the discovery of SHRB via searching "Polygon Magic" (it even shares a few characters with Vs.: Mia, Oleg/Oreg, Kara/Garia, Ramos, etc - if you compare the character designs you will see the similarities despite the totally different aesthetic, check out Oleg in Vs. to Oreg in SHRB). Always thought that was pretty cool to re-purpose them like that with a new style.

I remember Vs. solely because of the short skirts and slouch socks. What can I say? I'm a simple man.

I'm also a simple man. All I need is a list of fighting games where you can play as a noticeably toned female and I promise I'll uh, re-evaluate the genre.
