Ooh, cool thread! Don't know how I missed this one.
I do like me some vs fighting, though for the last decade or so its been mostly a single player affair. I still remain fascinated by their competitive aspects though, stuff like hit stun and frame data are right up my nerd alley.
Some fighters I have some experience with:
Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3: This was my childhood fighter. I lived in a little cul-de-sac growing up, and this was the neighborhood fighter of choice. We played all 3 MK games quite regularly, but this is the one I have fondest memories of. Admittedly, looking back on it now, the actual combat engine isn't all that great, but I think it was the wealth of moves, secrets, and fatalities that drew us in. It was always impressive to show up and be able to pull off a new Brutality or 10-hit juggle. We rotated in Killer Instinct as well, but that game was less fun when you sucked at it, whereas UMK3 had appeal regardless of skill I think.
Tekken 3/TTT: I guess this was wave 2 of being into fighters. I played this with my siblings while visiting that side of the family, and then wound up owning both games once I picked up a ps1. This was another case of a game being appealing for reasons other than its system to us as younger folks, since the crazy amount of unlockable characters had us taking turns clearing the story with every character, and by the time we finished that, we were decently competent at the game and had a good time beating each other up. Once the next gen rolled around, I piked up Tag Tourney and continued to have a good time with that one, but thats where my Tekken experience ends. Despite being a fan of the games, I can see where its detractors come from. The game does feel a little... lifeless, which imo also applies to the dude's other games, Virtua Fighter and Tobal. They are technically sound and impressive for their times, but they do lack some of the character I was used to from Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat.
Dragon Ball Z Fighters: This covers like... all eras of me playing fighting games growing up. Whatever the current fighter was, there was a DB game waiting for its turn. My earliest memories of using an emulator was to play the SFC DBZ fighters, my first ever import was DBGT: Final Bout, and I played all 6 Budokai/Tenkaishi games on ps2. Even today, I'll pick up one of the DB games every now and then and mess around with it. Admittedly its a love of the source material more than anything, but these games were varying levels of enjoyable. I think Tenkaishi 2 and Budokai 3 were the standout games for me, but I have fond memories of DB fighters throughout their history.
Guilty Gear XX Accent Core +: If I were forced to pick a favorite vs fighter, this would probably be it. This was also the last fighter I was able to play among friends regularly when it came out. Tons of character, killer visuals and music, super varied fighters, insane combos and specials that felt like they'd melt your tv. This is my shit for sure. I remember this third group of friends and I spending hours unlocking all the alternate characters and trying to beat the insane challenge modes, like beating golden versions of characters and hundred-round endurance matches and stuff. This and Marvel vs Capcom 2 were all we played for months on end unlocking things and beating each other up, but Guilty Gear was always my favorite between the two.
After Guilty Gear, I would mostly just dabble in single player experiences. Some games that stood out:
Metal & Lace 2 (PC-98 goodness)
Power Rangers: The Fighting Edition and Gundam Wing: Endless Dual (Impressive SNES fighters, plus I love me some sentai)
Melty Blood: Actress Again (Basically Guilty Gear with all girls, good shit)
Fist of the North Star (Basically Guilty Gear with all dudes, good shit)
Power Stone 2 (Closest thing to Smash bros that I actually enjoy)
King of Fighters Dream Match (Not a lot of KOF exposure, but I dug this one a lot)
Dead or Alive (2 Hardcore was a guilty pleasure, 4 was my first 360 game, still dig both of em)
Soul Calibur 2 (Probably the most frequently, randomly played fighter for me. Everyone had this. Its fun)
There are still some fighters I want to play, or play more. Eternal Champions on Sega CD, the Sailor Moon fighter on SFC, and the Treasure-developed Yu Yu Hakusho fighter come to mind.
