Okay... I was worried that meant FMV's or something haha, so cutscenes not being playable would have been a really bad big deal. Good to hear it was just Sega Experiment #5904 that didn't amount to much.

So I've been digging around on GameFAQs' system message boards (shock! horror!), and was reminded of a disturbing little tidbit about the clock capacitor on XBOX systems (at least revisions 1.0-1.5) being infamously failure prone. I'm likely going to spend time this evening cracking open my systems and removing them before they do damage (or more damage, who knows).
The fun part of all this is that there's a clock boot loop the system can get into with older softmods as well, and I suspect I have one of those susceptible to it. So I've been digging around trying to figure out how to properly upgrade before I chop out the cap. I settled on this package, which looks like the Extras disc has all I need to upgrade and put a new softmod on there. I also happen to have a hardmodded system I got from a co-worker, so I won't be touching that one outside of removing said capacitor, and the boot loop shouldn't be a problem. I hope.
The travails of keeping these systems going, y'all. I see why some folks go fully digital.
EDIT: Well, that wasn't too bad. Two of the systems I have here are 1.6 revisions, so nothing to be done with them. My main XBOX is a 1.1, though, so I needed to go in. As for the boot loop issue, I'd forgotten that I didn't give it power for quite some time and never ran into the issue, so the hack I installed was already patched. After that, it was just a matter of bending the capacitor until it snapped off. Probably should have clipped it, but eh. Desolder would have required removing the mobo, but also eh. It's still working fine.
I will add that it's a good thing I went in. There was a small amount of leakage starting. I cleaned up around it as best I could, although it was really hard to tell after a point whether I was picking up mostly dust or corrosion particles. Hopefully this system will be good to go for quite a while longer now.

I've been having a weird issue with my 13 year old PS2 Slim. When playing Rogue Galaxy, sometimes I will hear a "pop" sound, like an audio glitch in power amplitude. It's hard to explain in words. But it seems to happen when the game is loading audio samples. Like, if I'm in the menu, and I scroll the cursor over a bunch of items, that makes a sound effect. But eventually I'll hear a pop sound randomly as that sound effect is played. I hear it sometimes in other sections of the game. I have no idea what is causing it. I need to try another PS2 game and see if it still happens, or if it's something just with Rogue Galaxy. I really hope that the digital to analog audio converter in my PS2 Slim isn't starting to go bad.

I need to try another PS2 game and see if it still happens So tonight I decided to play the FFXII demo that came with DQ8. I didn't realize until tonight that this demo actually contains two unique scenarios (missions) outside the normal FFXII game: The scenarios have their own special objectives and bosses. Took about twenty minutes to finish both scenarios. It was cool being back in FFXII's world, and I quickly remembered why I loved it so much. Just amazing stuff. Anyway I never encountered that popping audio glitch while playing FFXII's demo. Everything sounded normal. So I think this anomaly is specific to Rogue Galaxy. I don't know if it's something with my RG disc, or if there's something about the particular Slim model I have which RG's audio engine doesn't get along with. I don't know. 97% of the time it doesn't happen anyway, so it's not a deal breaker. Just odd.

That's pretty neat. After I finish Vagrant Story, I'll need to get back to FFXII next for another Matsuno classic I never finished. I'll be checking out the HD remaster which sounds awesome (the base of it is the international version with the job system, and lots of other quality of life additions with the map and a speed up feature, etc).

I'll be checking out the HD remaster which sounds awesome I'll put it like this... you know how much I don't care to replay games I've already beaten. Especially not long RPGs. Well even after having put 109 hours into FFXII on PS2, I still plan to replay the entire game again via the PS4 HD remaster. That will be the very first PS4 title that I start my PS4 collection with. FFXII is a masterpiece and gets my highest praise.

I think that Sarge talked about this already. But yeah, if you've got an original Xbox, you might want to do this: Gonna have to do mine soon.

Yep, absolutely. I'm glad I discovered it. My XBOX still works really well, and I caught mine just in time.
I mentioned it earlier, but do make sure you check what model you have, though: the 1.6 revisions don't need this done (and actually won't work without that cap, which the video mentions). Also, make sure you're not running an old soft-mod that will go into a clock loop. I was fortunate enough that the mod I did had that fixed.
