Sarge I'm very happy that you have beaten Thief Gold. At least now we can both say we've beaten each other's favorite games (for those wondering, Sarge's is Chrono Trigger). It's true the Dark Engine has aged and those polys are low. But one thing I always liked about the Dark Engine, is that it feels very "solid". The mathematics behind the graphics and physics are just spot on. The sound design, well, I've not played a game with better sound design than Thief. Not in the seventeen some-odd years since I finished it. There's certainly parallels that can be drawn between King's Field and Thief, and I understand why you've brought KF up a few times as a result. (I do hope you play through more of the KF games man.) I also think you should give Thief 3: Deadly Shadows a try. As I said before, it's built with a console-mindset in target, and plays more geared towards that market. That's not necessarily a bad thing, as the experience is a bit more streamlined and you can play in third person.

I actually really liked the first person perspective, though. Very immersive. I also must confess I might have jumped a few times rounding corners into enemies...

I actually really liked the first person perspective, though. Very immersive. Well in that case you can play through Deadly Shadows entirely in first person as well. Although I really wouldn't suggest skipping Thief II. The second Thief has absolutely incredible level designs - it just lacks the fantasy-horror element that so permeated the original Thief. Thankfully Deadly Shadows brings that back.

Ex: I will definitely visit another King's Field. I don't think there's any question about that. I can also see myself trying another Thief game, maybe not before KF, but I'd like to see where else the series went. Deadly Shadows does sound really good, but if the level design is super solid in the second game, I could see giving that some run as well.

Ex: I will definitely visit another King's Field. I don't think there's any question about that. The one I most strongly recommend next is KF3, which was labeled King's Field II in the states. I like its cover art: One of my biggest gaming regrets, is passing up a brand new sealed copy of this game, for only $10 back in 2006 at Roses department store. If only I'd known how amazing the game was! If you fancy steampunk then you'd probably get a kick out of T2. It's all about steampunk and incredible level designs. It's just not scary is all.

I don't know about that. Eavesdropping on the main villain in Thief 2 in that one particular level was incredible. Hearing what they were doing to people. I recall some awesome Hammerites lore too as always.
Thief 2 arguably has better and more consistent level design from start to finish, it's more fancy places in The City though and some levels like the docks area even reminding me a lot of Deus Ex. But there is a lot of charm to the caves, temples, and weird organic/forest-like sections in Thief 1 that the sequel lacks.
Not many people talk about the villain in Thief 2, because of how obscure these games are at this point I guess. I thought he was incredible and he's far more active in the story than the Thief 1 villains were, I couldn't even name them. It's also extra fun knowing the guy who voices Garret does the main antagonist too and his performance is fittingly psychotic for it. It's comical at first but the further you get in 2, the more twisted and convincingly insane he becomes. He's not quite SHODAN but it's a similar awesome role.
Still can't remember if Sarge has played Deus Ex or System Shock 2, but it'd be interesting to see opinions on those.

Xeogred I agree, if Sarge hasn't played through the original Deus Ex he's really missing out. I mean, it's only the greatest noir-cyberpunk game ever made, no big deal. (Screw the critics btw, Invisible War was great fun.) I adore System Shock 2, but I'm really not sure if Sarge would care for it. He'd probably enjoy the technological aspect though. Both of you need to play through System Shock however. It's a crime against humanity not to.

*knocks on your noggin* I beat SS1 last year.
Since Deus Ex is more of an RPG I wouldn't be surprised if Sarge likes it more than Thief, might be more up his alley.

I have had Deus Ex installed for some time, actually. I might have uninstalled it literally last night to get some room, along with a lot of other games I haven't played it some time. I do plan on getting back to it, and I've always wanted to give Invisible War a shot as well. I've got the XBOX version; not sure if I have the PC game.

*knocks on your noggin* I beat SS1 last year. Senility is a helluva drug. I have had Deus Ex installed for some time, actually. / I've always wanted to give Invisible War a shot as well. As much as you liked Thief I do believe you'd like Deus Ex even more. Like Xeogred said, it's an action-RPG, technoir style. It's an incredible amount of fun, and has a good plot too. Invisible War is great IMO, it's just not as open-ended and the levels are a lot smaller, what with being designed for console first and foremost.
