I think I've run into a few problem games in Fusion, though. Can't remember which one it was, though; maybe Ax Battler? I know I had to go digging for other emulators, at any rate. Kega Fusion is fantastic, though. I've been a fan since back in the KGen days. I used to use that as my primary Genesis emulator along with a DOS-based frontend called Ultimate ROMs Launcher. I had quite the setup going there, with custom command-line switches for multiple emulators. I even had PKUNZIP going to unzip ROMs to run in emulators that didn't support compressed ROMs. Yeah, it's probably Ax Battler. The sprites don't appear at all in Kega, even now. I used to be faithful to Gens, but at some point Kega Fusion just overtook it and I never went back. I still mess with Snes9x and ZSNES cause Higan's unfriendly interface annoys me. For NES, I like FCEUX, though recently I had to use an old one called VirtuaNES because it's one of the few to support DATACH games. For Saturn I'm mostly all about Mednafen now, though I heard Yabause recently made huge strides. And as I said, Ootake for PCE/PCE-CD. Mostly Epsxe for PSX.

It sounds like a lot of us have history with emulation, probably due to our gaming preferences around retro gaming. I was into them when I was like 10 years old in the late 90's/early 2000's, we name dropped a few of the really old emulators awhile back somewhere like NESTICLE and such haha. I too remember when ZSNES couldn't even do transparencies correctly and back then, on my family PC with its whopping 2-4GB HDD, those SNES rom files were quite large and added up! Not to mention some of the more advanced games like Seiken Densetsu 3 really chugged the machine... yeah there were times when SNES would be toasty. You know what? ZSNES still rules and is probably the one I'll always have the most nostalgia for. Super Mario All-Stars which I'm replaying lately runs like total crap in both snes9x and bsnes for me. I don't want to bother tinkering with the configuration's too much since everything else plays great but you know what plays All-Stars great still? ZSNES 1.51... so it's still good to have around and comes in handy. I've always been into emulation off and on but have been a bigger fan again lately because of two reasons: - USB gamepad's finally got legit in the last handful of years. My favorite is the Japanese SNES Buffalo controller - make sure it's legit Japanese and not a Chinese knockoff. Back in the day good USB controllers were nonexistent, but I ordered some PS2 controller adapter from Play-Asia once that I still used sometimes. Now you can find replica controllers of just about anything and I do want to get more, but the quality can certainly vary. I wasn't impressed with this Hyperkin Genesis 6-button pad. I'm still hoping I can find a Genesis alternative, because using an SNES controller for Sega games is just flat out wrong to my childhood. - Second reason, screenshots. I love being a Retro Gaming Photographer taking snapshots of things I love in games or whatnot. All those little screenshots I post in the Games Beaten thread here at HRG are 99% of the time my own saved and uploaded screenshots. It's a joy. I've been doing this with anime/fansubs for years and it's always cool to revisit those folders and look at personally saved screenshots. Same with gaming now. I played Koudelka this year with Epsxe because the game price is just too high for me to justify. It was a great experience. In general though, I kind of prefer sticking to the pre-disc based systems for emulation. But I'll consider it if prices or localization issues are involved with some newer stuff going forward. KEGA Fusion definitely blows me away... Genesis, Sega Master System, Game Gear, and Sega CD all in one and my experience playing anything has been flawless so far. This reminds me, looks like I have version 3.63 but the latest was 3.64. I'll grab it for the heck of it!
For NES lately I've been using FCEUX. And for GB I've been using gambatte.

I have to admit, I stopped using ZSNES a long time ago. I use SNES9x now. bsnes is fine, but also mostly overkill for most stuff, so I don't typically use it.
FCE Ultra works pretty well, although similarly, I use Nestopia instead. I was using the latest official version, but now am using the Undead Edition. There are a few games, though, that don't work quite right there, so I have to roll with FCEUX.

I fight regularly with TG-16/Duo emulators. I think it mostly has to do with how various CDs were ripped. Not all of them floating around play nice with certain emulators; it may work in Magic Engine, it might work in Ootake, or maybe Mednafen.

I use a fair amount of Android emulators too, but I'm not sure if anyone around here is into that. I pretty much exclusively emulate on an Android phone. If I've got time to bust out my PC, I've got a Steam/GoG backlog that is nearly insurmountable. I'm currently using ZNES (your recommendation) and GENPLUSdroid

Not all of them floating around play nice with certain emulators; it may work in Magic Engine, it might work in Ootake, or maybe Mednafen. I find that's a problem with all CD-based emulation. Even with the PSX, there were games I had to get 4 versions of before I could get one that would run, not counting the number of times I had to mess with the cue file to get it to work. Back in the days, music files would often be compressed as MP3 and you had to convert them to Wave to get them to work. I've never had that problem with more advanced systems like Dreamcast or PS2, and outside of fan translations requiring certain versions of ROMs sometimes, I haven't had it with older systems, either; it's really just that generation of CD-ROM systems. Even ePSXe seems to struggle with IMG+CUE+SUB rips often.

I pretty much exclusively emulate on an Android phone. Cool, here's what I use right now... Game Boy & Game Boy Color = My OldBoy! Game Boy Advance = My Boy! Game Gear = GG Nostalgia Pro Genesis = MD.emu Mobile (as in classic mobile games) = J2ME Nintendo Entertainment System = NES Nostalgia Pro N64 = MegaN64 & Mupen64Plus PlayStation = ePSXe (yes there's an official GooglePlay version) Super Nintendo = SNES9X EX+ (alternatively "SuperRetro" if needed) TurboGrafx-16 / PC Engine = PCE.emu Some of those cost $, but worth it. Even ePSXe seems to struggle with IMG+CUE+SUB rips often. It depends on the source. The [REDUMP] project re-dumped nearly every PS1 ISO there is, and made sure the images were 100% perfect. They work, well, perfectly.

I think I've run into a few problem games in Fusion, though. Can't remember which one it was, though; maybe Ax Battler? That reminded me of something. There are some Game Gear games that won't work with the RetroFreak. I went searching online and ran into the suggestion that one change the .gg extensions to .sms. Did this and (some of) the games work. Weird! However, this only seems to be successful with games that were on both SMS and GG (so Ax Battler doesn't work regardless). I'm sure this all makes sense to someone who's familiar with Sega tech. I will say this -- the RetroFreak lumps the SG-1000/SMS/GG into "one system."

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who does this! That's awesome! <high fives> I really dig your work, man!
I'm pretty in to this as well. In fact, I may have gotten a little bit ... uh ... compulsive about it, to the point where it can have an impact in determining what to play next should that decision come down to a choice between playing a game where I can capture screen shots and one where I can't. Okay maybe it's not a major impact, but I've gone to some lengths to ensure I can capture screenshots on most of my gaming systems. Obviously emulators are a huge boon in this regard. Retroarch really captures some beautiful screenshots and as with most things in Retroarch it has the benefit of working the same way for every emulated system. For the purposes of other PC gaming, Nvidia Experience does a really nice job as well (I really like this one because it somehow detects the 'target resolution' of the capture meaning it doesn't capture the 'black bars' for an image in 4:3 aspect ratio for instance). I actually have a keyboard macro set up for this last utility; one key press, one click of the shutter, lol. I've also used Steam for image capture, but I've found that the Nvidia utility is actually a bit more robust.
But that's not all! I also have my handheld systems setup for this as well. I have my 3DS running on Luma3DS CFW, which has a built in screen capture function (it's slow, kinda clunky, ... and it has caused games to freeze up on me a couple of times ... but hey it totally works!). My PSP is also running on CFW (ProCFW) and for that one there's a tailor made screenshot plugin available. Thankfully this plugin runs like a champ; to the point I was actually surprised at how well it does (although it does tend to take shots in 'burst mode' so depending on how quickly you execute the button combo, so you tend to end up with a fair number of dupes).
Any hoo, that's a whole lot of preamble just to confirm that I too am a game photography enthusiast! It's a whole lot of fun trying to capture dynamic, beautiful, or iconic shots from games, kind of like a 'meta-game within the game' . And much like keeping a 'review archive', a 'screenshot archive' provides a really nice point of reference when I'm trying to remember the details for a particular game. Nice to run into a fellow enthusiast!
