Ex,
Crystal Beans has got a really appealing sound. I miss when games sounded like this.
Lately I've had a newfound appreciation for Super Mario 64's OST. I grew up with this game, so I more or less took its music for granted, but I was wandering around YouTube lately and the quality of the compositions awed me. Some N64 games have music that sounds well composed but the samples sound a little dated. 007 Goldeneye and Ocarina of Time for instance. I don't think that's the case with Mario 64. The Dire Dire Docks (water) theme seems particularly excellent to me now, which is interesting cause I feel the same way about Donkey Kong Country's "Aquatic Ambience" theme these days. Maybe chill music is the "silver lining" to my antipathy for water levels.

Maybe chill music is the "silver lining" to my antipathy for water levels. I feel this way about snow/ice levels in games. Those levels tend to be annoying with slippery slopes and falling ice stalactites and such. However, composers generally create soothing, twinkly, sparsely orchestrated tracks for these kind of levels. So while I'm often annoyed at the level design, the chillax music makes up for it.

Not surprised to see all the excellent taste here. Great call on Jewel Master, Ex. Also happy to see Mushi's Stage 4 in particular get a shoutout, as that lead up to and reveal of the midboss is so fucking beautiful. I have to give a shoutout to some of the Data East Genesis ports. Imo, these all easily outclass their arcade originals (Not surprising, they were transposed by Sakimoto). Vapor Trail - Yeah, there is only one Stage track for the game, but good lord is it killer. Some of the best drums and guitar on the Genesis, and the composition is wonderful. I listen to this all the time. The Boss Track is a banger as well. Love this game. Atomic Runner - If this Stage 1 ost doesn't make you move and groove, you might be dead! I like the entire ost, but this track stands out. Also probably Data East's best game. Midnight Resistance - I got chills just opening the Youtube to link this. Fuck this song is good. The Final Boss music is no slouch either, with some Chapman Stick-esk blassline slappage throughout. (Also a clear call to King Crimson, the greatest band of all time ) Two more that I always associate with each other due to their relentless OSTs. I imagine these are not for everyone, but I like this kind of crap. Streets of Rage 3 - This is my favorite SoR OST by quite a margin, and I love them all. This music just mandates funky dancing. Its energetic, weird, and uses sounds that shouldn't even be in music. This shit makes me think of factories, moving cogs, pistons just blasting the fuck out of everything. A personal absolute fav. Adventures of Batman and Robin (Gen) - Oh man, this game. Jesper Kyd's finest imo, absolutely relentless. I love that this OST manages such obscene sounds, while remaining so consistent that you might not even catch the track changes. Fun fact, the (beautiful) title screen has to cycle something like 13 times before the opening theme loops. Its long as hell! Another YMMV, but I really love this kind of stuff.

Some seriously great stuff there Dunpeal, I really liked Atomic Runner and Midnight Resistance. Clearly I've done myself a disservice by never having played it. A few more: Gimmick! OST(A must listen, Sunsoft's finest.) Lagrange Point OST(The best FM you can hear on Famicom.)

Exile Turbo-CD
The original MSX soundtrack remixed in a funky dance style, it has some more forgettable tracks but outright jewels as well. "Rains" is probably my favorite track. Well worth a listen. The game is very underrated, too. Ys IV - Dawn of Ys - Temptation of the Master HarlequinOf course Ys has a reputation for great soundtracks, but this song in particular had me transfixed when I played the game. I think game music has much more impact within the context of games, and running through this dungeon, running through monsters themselves, to this music was a unique feeling.

I think dunpeal2064 and I are the only ones that love SoR3's score, apparently. Seems like everyone else on the internet dogs on it for being different or something. It was one of my top favorite Genesis OST's of all time growing up and then I discovered the internet, cue nightmares. Streets of Rage 3 OST, T03: Fuze (Round 1-1) - probably my favorite

My personal MOST NOSTALGIC OST OF ALL TIME Shinobi 3 Return Of The Ninja Master OST- WhirlwindPure bliss. Takes me right back to being five years old, living in Tennessee on a military base hanging out in the cigarette smoke drenched home of my best buddies Doug and Kenny, beating their games for them. He Runs always impresses me a lot nowadays, because it's such a long and dynamic track. Long everchanging chiptunes are really cool to hear thesedays. I say this all as a Nintendo kid too... there's just nothing quite as powerful as Shinobi 3's OST. The Technosoft stuff which I discovered 10-15 years ago maybe almost rivals it, but Shinobi 3 is just too good.

I thought I was awesome for beating Shinobi 3 at 14 years old. But someone beating it at 5 years old... wow! I really gotta get around to replaying all the classic Shinobi games someday. I liked Ninja Gaiden OK, but Shinobi was always my favorite. - Talking about Genesis FM songs that take me back, here's a few: Sword of Vermilion (Town)(Such a forlorn and downtrodden dirge, fit the theme of the first area PERFECT. Awesome OST overall.) Sonic 2 (Metropolis Zone)(Utterly genious track, my all time favorite Sonic tune. I used to just let Sonic sit while I nodded my head.) Phantasy Star II (Restration)(We all know PS2 has a brilliant OST, but it's always nice to remember why.) Flashback (Holocube sequence)(Flashback has a low key, but smartly atmospheric OST.) Splatterhouse 3 (Possessed Room)(Not only is Splatterhouse 3 a criminally underrated beat 'em up, so its OST. It's really impressive how Namco made such creepy music with the FM chipset. This track in particular has a convincing sounding theremin.)

It's cool to hear from fans of the SoR3 soundtrack. I never actually though it was bad. Actually, just off the top, I can think of at least 3 tracks I like.

There are a few good tunes, but some of them are just too crazy for my tastes. I used to think that SoR2 was my favorite of the bunch, but I think I like SoR's a bit better. Moon Beach in particular is one of my absolute favorites.
