I think the main reason people say Hagane is so hard is because you have more moves than you normally do in a game of that era, and you get them right from the start, so you do have to take a moment to get familiar with them. Once you get going, though, it's tough-but-fair, which is the best kind of tough. @opwuaioc Lords of Thunder is on my to-play list. I messed with it a little and I did like the sword mechanic, so I expect it to resonate with me.
If you can get over the SFX, it is a great game (sword mechanic notwithstanding -- that's a minor complaint).

I love this era of Shinji Hosoe. Definitely in the vein of his Xenosaga 2 tunes. I wish he was the main composer for that whole trilogy.

I probably should have posted this one back when I went through Maui Mallard. Very chill, DKC-ish ambient vibe.

So, who did Stage 1 best?
Well Sarge , I still don't take back everything I say about SoR3's OST... but I can't deny going back to SoR2, the music is probably one of the few factors that makes it my favorite of the trilogy! It's just sublime. Despite being more groovin', it's still got somewhat of a slimey ugly neon night energy to it that I love. In a way SoR1's OST seems even a little darker atmospherically too though.
Messed around with SoR1 and SoR3 again today on the hardest difficulties, so I didn't get far haha. I also played the USA version of SoR3... so what even is Hard on that, Ultra Mania?
Man, I had a great time with SoR4. But it just can't touch the aesthetics of the first three. I'll probably keep playing them again or do some normal difficulty runs to clear it with some characters I don't frequent. I think it's crazy I tend to completely forget Shiva is playable in SoR3. I know of Roo though, or even the Hard Gay guy in the Bare Knuckle version. I'd like to give Max a run with SoR2. SoR1 is trickier though, not sure I like Adam much. But he was my favorite in SoR4 by far.

Xeogred I'm generally a SoR2 kind of guy but I completely listened to SoR1's stage 1 theme and I think it's better than SoR2's. It must have been abso-frickin-lutely phenomenal in 1991.

For me Go Straight is one of the most iconic game theme songs ever, but I've heard it so many times in my life that I don't really want to listen to it again. SOR1 Stage 1 is excellent too. My favorite part is the atmospheric little bassline at the start that announces the beat. I like that it starts kind of quietly.

I'm more of a SoR guy, but both are excellent. My favorite track might be Moon Beach, though.
