Yeah, that's what I was speculating about as well, toei. With access to more cartridge space, one has to wonder what that system could have looked like. It's a capable piece of kit. It's also my understanding that the MSX also sports similar hardware.

Montezuma's Revenge = A very interesting non-linear exploratory platformer, with impressive graphics and design. Unfortunately it's newer than 1983 by one whole year. I think Xeogred or Sarge might like this one though. Now we're talking! This is pretty legit.

Given the platforms it's on, I'd probably be inclined to say it's okay. The only place it ended up on a third-gen system was SMS, all the way in '88.

Alright, beat Smurf on Skill 4! Also: Oh look, a 3D maze shooter on the ColecoVision! It even has digitized voices. This is Sewer Sam, originally released for the Intellivision, then ported to the CV with improved graphics (in Japan, it was released for the MSX in a version apparently identical to the CV's). The point is to find and destroy three Soviet subs that somehow found their way in the New York sewer system. The Ninja Turtles could have handled it, but they didn't exist yet, so it's up to a guy who fell down a manhole while trying to kiss his girlfriend. You pack a gun with six bullets that takes a few seconds to reload once empty, and your have a decreasing air gauge that refills when you change tunnels through one of the doors on either side. You know you've found one of the right tunnels once the upper gauge shows red. The shoot isn't very satisfying, and most of the time, it's better to just walk around enemies. Weirdly, you can even climb up walls to let them pass. This is more interesting than good, but it's still basically playable. Also, Xeogred, you might like Super Cobra.

This Colecovision stuff looks really promising, I'll be honest. I'm going to make an effort to try it out this month.

That's quite impressive looking given the hardware and time, I'll admit to being surprised at what we've been able to dig up so far.

You guys just keep telling me what to give a quick look at and I will!
I wasn't sure what to think of Vanguard. I keep assuming 90% of these games probably operate with one button (spacebar), but I have no idea. Seemed like you shoot automatically in Vanguard when you're not holding the spacebar down to move around faster. No clue.

Just so folks know, you can also emulate Colecovision using BlueMSX. I just got through giving a couple of games a go, Alcazar and Gateway to Apshai. I couldn't quite figure out what my goal was in the former, but the latter is an early action-RPG. On Colecovision, you actually cycle through inventory, select keys, cast spells, and so on, by selecting with the number pad and then hitting the action button. It's actually a pretty solid little game.

Oh, right, I forgot about Jumpman Junior. It's one of those "collect all the items in the stage" platformers, and I always liked the bigger C64 version. I also thought it was pretty neat how when you fell upon dying, you could still end up collecting items as you bounce down to the bottom.
