Ah, a pre-modded system. Honestly, I feel the same way about my Duo. I really don't want to crack it open. If you have any electronics folks nearby, they might be able to look at it. Heck, I'd do it if I were on hand! I'm willing to wager something like that is what happened.

Seems like I'm running out of options at this point and I might just have to bite that bullet. I don't know much about Saturns, but I'd at least clean the laser lens, and possibly adjust its pot(s).

I guess another question is, does it try to spin the disc? Will it actually play audio tracks?

So, yes, it will play the music from the discs but not run the games.
And yes, I did clean the laser itself. I also tried re-positioning the laser before trying to run any of the games.

Not that actual hardware isn't worth salvaging, but it doesn't sound too promising. I have a similar problem with my PS2 which I didn't use for like 15 years and now I can barely play anything on it. It won't always recognize games and when it does, they are awfully choppy. At the very least, I'd have to open it and get rid of all the dust. Maybe replace some parts, too. At that point, it might be less trouble buying a new one.
As for the Saturn, maybe there are some useful vids on YT, but I just want to point out that Yabause seems to emulate SFIII just fine.

In this instance I'd just replace all the laser and CD related components entirely. Or more optimally; emulate. Which is how I personally play Saturn games anyway.

If it's playing music and not running the games, it's going to be the chip. I've got money on it. Before replacing anything else, you can just take the mod chip out and replace the ribbon cable so that it's in a "normal" configuration, and see if that works. If it doesn't, then you know it's the laser.

The beginning of this month has had me a bit busy (had to do another two-day trip for my job, trying to finish Ys: Memories of Celceta). But I've got that new bluetooth controller, and I've got a bunch of fan translated ROMs moved to my phone, so tonight I plan to start playing SOMETHING related to this theme. Anyone else around here playing something fan translated in this regard yet?

Not yet. I've been trying to finish up God of War. Then I'm probably going to dive into something shorter, maybe Hyper Iria.

Ironically, the theme where I'd want to play the longest games (ie RPGs) is the one where I have the least time. But I'll try to pick something next week.
