Just a heads-up that this Arcana hack was recently added to Romhacking. Doesn't touch the encounter rate, but it makes it faster to gain levels. At any rate! You would likely enjoy the rest of the games in id's Software / Fountainhead Entertainment's "RPG" series: DOOM RPG DOOM II RPG Orcs & Elves II Wolfenstein RPG I'm not sure what a good PC J2ME emulator is these days. I play J2ME games on my smartphone using this. Yeah, I've been looking into it, it's quite possible I'll play a few more of those. I use KEmulator myself and it works pretty well. Which is convenient, since I have no qualms with playing mobile games, just not on a mobile/smartphone. The Elder Scrolls Travels games are also good dungeon crawling options as far as mobile gaming goes.

Doesn't touch the encounter rate, but it makes it faster to gain levels. Thanks for the info. Last night I put some time into Swords & Serpents on NES... nope not doing that one. First off you have to write down five different passwords just to continue your game. Nah. The combat wasn't much fun and the encounter rate was quite high - although it did at least give you a mini-map onscreen. I then finished the first dungeon in Shadow Brain. Shadow Brain is actually pretty decent for real. It's unique in a lot of ways, and has a good interface. But there's sixteen dungeons in the game, and that'd probably take at least sixteen hours to beat. Which is longer than what I'm looking for. Here's something interesting about Shadow Brain though - the game came with a VHS to tell the player the backstory. Here's the video: If you'd like to buy a full copy of Shadow Brain for Famicom, you can get it now for the low low price of $239.80. Time to get some actual carts!!! - Anyway I was hoping to find a really good console/handheld based FPDC for this month, that isn't over a dozen hours long or so. (There's some great FPDC stuff on DS I've not done yet, but that's all in the 30-70 hour long range.) Unfortunately I'm not hitting much FPDC gold on consoles thus far (that I've not already beaten mind). Honestly FPDCs tend to shine on PC first and foremost, but PC FPDCs are usually very involved and long affairs. Well if I can't find a console or handheld FPDC that's reasonably short and worth my time, I will migrate on over to PC to get my fix. I'm gonna beat at least one FPDC for this theme.

Well tonight after bouncing off Dungeon Magic (NES), Mysterium (GB), and Towers - Lord Baniff's Deceit (GBC), I gave up on consoles/handhelds and decided to go for a PC FPDC. Looking through the ones I had already readied, I decided to try Lightning Warrior Raidy II. The main reason being I'd previously beaten (and enjoyed) LWR1 back in 2016, and have been meaning to get around to its sequel for three years now. There's actually a fair amount of versions of Lightning Warrior Raidy II. LRW2 first released in Japan in 1995 for MS-DOS. It was ported to Windows 95, FM Towns and PC98 in 1996. Then LRW2 was remade in 2007 for Windows XP. That now twelve year old XP remake is the version I am playing, via the official English localization. I put an hour and a half into it tonight. Cleared the first dungeon, made it to the boss of the first dungeon, and did not beat her. Tomorrow I'll try again. I very much enjoyed what I played tonight. LWR2 improves on LWR1 in some important ways, which I won't go into presently. But let's get this out of the way up front, yes this is a hentai game. But LWR2 has plenty of actual gameplay to backup its lewder aspects. As a matter of fact, from a purely dungeon crawling standpoint, it's funner than any of the other FPDCs I've tried thus far for this theme. The interface is great, there's a very useful auto-map, combat is turn based, the encounter rate is entirely reasonable, the music's good, the graphics are sumptuous... so far I'm quite pleased. (And for you perverts out there, the hentai elements are above par if you're into that sort of thing.) So here are some SFW screenshots I took tonight: The original LWR took me about 8 hours to beat. HLTB shows 11 hours for LWR3. So I'm guessing LWR2 will be somewhere in that range. Which is the kind of time frame I'm looking for right now. I may very well beat this FPDC indeed. Also this game's intro's song is really good: (Although it's NSFW-ish, so watch out.)

Shadow Brain gives me a strong Megami Tensei vibe based on the screenshots I've seen. Would you say that's true?

As far as dungeon-crawlers with girlies go, I really enjoyed Dragon Knight II. Nice and breezy and a lot of fun. Still searching for an affordable copy of the game's predecessor.

Shadow Brain gives me a strong Megami Tensei vibe based on the screenshots I've seen. Would you say that's true? I think Shadow Brain was influenced by Megami Tense II, I believe that's plausible. I also want to stress that Shadow Brain seemed like a quality Famicom FPDC from what I played. I only bypassed it due to its game length looking longer than what I'm after right now. Here's a video showing a fair amount of Shadow Brain's gameplay in English: As far as dungeon-crawlers with girlies go, I really enjoyed Dragon Knight II. The whole Dragon Knight series has always looked fun to me. Unfortunately the only one I know of available in English is Dragon Knight III; localized westward as Knights of Xentar. Is there a way to play Dragon Knight II in English? So many of Elf's games look totally amazing, and ruefully remain Japanese language only.

Yeah, Xentar is the only thing in English.
Note that parts 1 & 2 of the series are FPDC games, part 3 (Xentar) is a more traditional JRPG, while 4 is a SRPG. I have yet to play the first game, but of the three I've experienced Xentar is the best.

of the three I've experienced Xentar is the best Thanks for clarifying that. At least the best one is available in English. - I put 2.5 hours more into Lightning Warrior Raidy II today, bringing me to 3.5 hours invested so far. From what I've read, this game has three dungeons. The first dungeon has three floors, I finished it today. The second dungeon has eight floors, I cleared the first floor of that dungeon, and saved on the second floor tonight. The pattern so far seems that every floor has its own boss. So I've taken down four bosses at this point. I started hitting invisible walls in the second dungeon tonight, so perhaps the complexity will start ratcheting up soon. I still like this game quite a bit, and mostly for the gameplay believe it or not, although the eroge aspect is well done not gonna lie. I plan to finish this one definitely, as long as it doesn't get too grindy. I have had to intentionally grind up a few levels already. LWR2's difficulty is very centered on your current difficulty level.
Also the damn shop theme has been stuck in my head all day:
Stupid catchy shop theme!

Some of you may remember when I bought this last year: Since that's a FPDC I've been interested in for a long while, I may actually boot it up this month! After LWR2 is done obviously.

Yeah I'm not really looking forward to that part. Plus Nemesis only supports MS-DOS, so I've got to do all the installation and playing through DOSBox. Maybe it'll prove worth the hassle.
