When I was a kid, my mom worked in a video rental store for a while. So I got to rent games all the time (at a discount). Had a lot of winners! Had some losers. I think the worst game I ever rented was this: It looks so fun, but the box is a lie.

>Sarge Yeah borrowing an already borrowed something is just not right. I'm sure I did that before with games as a kid too though. I know I lost a game at least once like that also. And renting an RPG sounds like an effort in torture, I mean that because of losing your save file every time. Maybe if you named your save file "Erase&UDie!" or something, that might have made kids think twice. >laurenhiya21 It makes me sad you couldn't rent games as a kid. I guess on the bright side, it meant you really played the games you had that much more. Regarding renting RPGs, at my local store you could just extend rentals. I never had the money to buy games unless they were used and not especially highly sought-after, so all I did was rent. I know I had to extend Phantasy Star IV a few times to finish it. It was one of the first RPGs I played on my own, and I was so into it I absolutely had to finish it. In the early and mid '90s I think the standard for rentals, whether games or movies, was two days; later on they started getting looser, allowing for 5 days or even a full week... you could finish a SNES or Genesis RPG in a week, if you stay at it.

I had to extend Phantasy Star IV a few times to finish it. I imagine renting PS4 long enough to beat it, was still considerably cheaper than buying it. Not a bad idea.

Our biggest problem at most of the rental stores is that we just didn't have the money to keep it out for that long. Budgets were tight in Sarge's household; it's actually quite remarkable that I ended up with the games that I did. (It's also a big blessing to be as well off as we are, relative to where we were. Young me could never have imagined having a collection like I've got now.)

Young me could never have imagined having a collection like I've got now.) Nor could I. But then I remember the adage; When I was a kid I had lots of free time but limited toys, as an adult I have lots of toys but limited free time. All we have to do is live to retirement age! Or just forgo sleep, as I do. Which may keep me from reaching retirement age. - I've been trying to remember the last time I rented a game from Blockbuster. I'm pretty sure it was this: I believe I rented that in 1998, and that was the last one before Blockbuster tanked in my hometown. After that I rented games from Video Warehouse. For a while I was renting PS1 games and burning copies of them, and then using VGS to play them (an emulator so awesome Sony bought it so they could kill it). Which upon retrospect was an unethical thing to do, but I was dirt poor back then. As far as I can remember, I only bought one closeout game from a rental store. In 1999, I bought Kirby's Dream Land 3 from a Video Warehouse. It included the box, instruction manual, all that. I think I paid $17 for it. Who knows what that'd be worth now... but I certainly got my money out of it.

Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers Ha, I rented the hell out of this as well. Fun fact, Natsume would use the same engine to later release The Ninja Warriors Again, one of the greatest Beat Em Ups ever made. I rented games a LOT as a kid. Had a little mom 'n pop video store around the corner, and they would let me take home games for 2 days for $1, since our family frequented them so much. A few that stand out: Spiderman and Venom: Maximum Carnage - Along with renting every Power Rangers game I could (All 2), I also rented every Spiderman game I saw. This, along with the MMPR beat em up, were the regulars to return home with me for a weekend, though. As a kid I loved Venom, and thought it was the coolest thing that I could play with him. That said, I sucked at beat em ups in general back then, and never made it very far here. Still have a soft spot for this one. Mega Man X2/Mega Man X3 - The first Mega Man X game was a defining game for me, but until recently I had never owned these games, and had resorted to (repeated) rentings. This was my first experience with what I would call a "very similar but still awesome" sequel. Its hard to describe, but it was just so weird playing a game so similar to one I had spent hundreds of hours with. I fully enjoyed both games, but most fondly remembered X2 Final Fantasy Legends - The first Final Fantasy, and first traditional RPG I ever played. I rented this while very sick, and have vivid memories of attempted to navigate this game at near-fever-dream state. I just remember feeding a party member something, and permanently mutating them. It left such a bad taste in my mouth that I actively swore off Final Fantasy games and thought they were all dumb, until a friend convinced me to try this cool new FFVII game. For some reason, I later picked up, finished, and thoroughly enjoyed Legends III, but have yet to return to this one. It actually still makes me feel ill to see the game, as if it snaps me back to being super sick. N64 - Renting consoles, what a weird thing. But yeah, this was my first foray into 3D gaming, renting an N64 and a copy of Super Mario 64. I had a friend staying over the night I took it home, so we decided to take turns. Except, whenever it was my friend's turn, he would switch over to my copy of Super Mario RPG. He actually stayed up the entire night in attempt to beat it. Just a funny little memory, and looking back, this same friend later introduced me to Chrono Trigger, so its understandable. Devil May Cry 1&2 - It feels odd, looking back now, that I was still renting games at this point. Even more odd, I don't think I rented anything for my ps1. I had heard great things about DMC, but also heard it was short, and young me didn't consider things like replayability, especially with how obsessed I was with RPGs. I fondly remember renting the first DMC, and finishing it that same day (I bumped the difficulty down when it asked, don't judge!). I enjoyed the game so much that, when the 2nd game came out, I rented that too! It, uh... well, even bad-taste young little me knew this was no good. It was so bad that I actively avoided playing DMC3 for years, which is a damn shame. Ephemeral Phantasia - The one other ps2 game I rented... during the Great Memory Card Shortage. I remember a quirky talking guitar thing, and playing the first part of the game too many times. Don't rent RPGs without a memory card. Never even attempted this one since then, its opening didn't leave a strong impression even after multiple playthroughs.

>Spiderman and Venom: Maximum Carnage
Wasn't that the one that had a red cartridge? Kinda crazy the publisher would go through that much trouble, but I can respect the effort.
>Don't rent RPGs without a memory card
Sage advice!
I had a bad experience renting an RPG because of a faulty memory card. I had rented (the glorious) Vagrant Story, and made it halfway through the game in a weekend. Then I rented the game again the following weekend, only to find out my (third party) memory card had failed. Ugh. Put me off playing Vagrant Story for years after that. Not that I didn't enjoy the game, but the pain of losing ~20 hours of progress really stung.

Oh, man, losing saves via a crappy memory card... I had a third-party one that piggy-backed on a legit PS2 memory card, and one day it just went "poof". I lost a lot of saves there. I still never have made the push to finish Growlanser 3 because of that.

My little sister just straight up accidentally erased my 100% Donkey Kong Country 2 file right before my eyes. I've never fully completed the Lost World again ever since. Think she did it with Super Mario World too at some point.

I had a Dragon Warrior III save wiped one time by a friend of mine's brother. Think he didn't do the reset-power trick. Didn't matter that much, I played through that game enough as it was!
