I wonder which one of us has finished the most RPGs? I'd wager you've beaten more 4th and 5th gen JRPGs, and Sarge has beaten more 6th and 7th gen JRPGs. You've both beaten more JRPGs than me though, for sure! I have beaten quite a few, but I'm in the minor leagues compared to you two gents. I love the JRPG genre, but I tend to prioritize other shorter genres, as a consequence of not having lived the kind of life style that allows one to beat troves of JRPGs. I've got an itch for a PS2 JRPG lately. As usual I will fail to convince you to play the best PS2 JRPG ever made: That said, you can't go wrong with:

Those both look super long and I'm invested in Shadow Hearts, so Covenant's a bigger priority than others for me right now. And it'll be up in the air if I even finish Suikoden IV because of its bad reputation, lol. Even if it's decent though it looks shorter than the norm. But Tactics sounded pretty decent from Tsumuri's review, so IV's been on mind a bit lately.

Those both look super long Well here's my time to beat for all mentioned: SH:C = 42 hours SMT:N = 50 hours DQ8 = 68 hours All of those were without strategy guides or walkthroughs of course. I'm not saying to skip playing Covenant though. I'd actually be very interested in your opinion of SH:C after you've finished it. Primarily to see how you will contrast SH:C versus SH.

For some reason I was thinking they were both like in the 80-90 ballpark. Well, who knows. I also have DQ4 DS, Chrono Trigger DS, and FF12 (unfinished business) on my mind. ... maybe FF12's a good candidate for Brand New Déjà Vu in July. Whenever I get back to FF12 though, I'm going to play the Zodiac Age remaster.

Whenever I get back to FF12 though, I'm going to play the Zodiac Age remaster. Good call. I plan to start collecting PS4 games next year. When I do, that will be the first one I buy.

I think I put together a beat list years ago in a discussion with Ex. Might be interesting to check! But yeah, I suspect toei has me whomped on 4th gen in particular.

I can only blame myself, but I think I'm going to have to restart SF2 on Normal because there was this raft battle against this sea monsters which was kind of insane. Later I found out that given the open world-ish nature of the game, you are actually supposed to fight that battle a bit later, but you can still trigger it earlier. Well, I'm probably going to restart and play the game to completion eventually, but I can already say this is not a 'oh my God this is so much better than the first game' kind of sequel. It does a few things better and a few things worse and many things are the same. SF1 felt more compact, I'm not a fan of the big overworld map.
I'm going to come back to it in a few months and I'll start from scratch, meanwhile I'll play something else.
-- Xeo, Covenant is pretty good. And as someone who didn't finish it but will, SMT: Nocturne is very good.

Can you not Egress from that fight? But yeah, I really think SF is better on normal.

I had no idea SF2 had open world aspects, interesting.
Last night in Luminous Arc I reached chapter 24. I am at the very very end of the game now. Unfortunately I'm on the road today (for work), so I likely won't play the game tonight (due to getting home so late). I'm hoping to beat LA tomorrow night though!

Can you not Egress from that fight? But yeah, I really think SF is better on normal. I saved the game before that fight, so that's not a problem. It's just that 1) I feel guilty for checking a walkthrough and finding out I didn't have to fight that battle right now, 2) that battle is going to be a pain even later and the crazy bonus attack enemies get on Super combined with the random turn order is going to drive me crazy. 95% of the time I lose a unit and I have to restart a battle is because an enemy got to act twice before the unit that got killed. It's still doable, but you have to take battles very slowly and there's always a fair bit of chance involved. So I don't know if I have the patience for it since it feels overly luck based. Oh yeah, you could always grind, but I'm not doing that and there's no point playing on a higher difficulty setting then. Normal or Super, I still want to beat the game, just not right now. I'm also looking forward to the GBA remake of the first game actually, apparently the turn order isn't as unpredictable and I really like how that game looks. In any case, I'm currently playing another SRPG and the FE5 fan translation is coming out in a couple of days, so that might be next.
