I generally agree that games that start off poorly have a really good chance of having players fall off the wagon, especially if they're like us and have lots of options. I tend to be more devoted than most, but I won't lie, I've definitely dropped games that were slow at the beginning (i.e. a lot of RPGs) and just never came back. If you're going to have it be slow, the world building needs to be impressive, or at the very least throw the player a bone with some combat. Dragon Warrior VII makes this mistake with an intro that can last nearly three hours!

Dragon Warrior VII makes this mistake with an intro that can last nearly three hours! Thankfully the 3DS remake remedies this to an extent.

As weird as it sounds, I think I actually prefer the old way to the remake; it set up a much more eerie and compelling atmosphere, even if 21-year-old me didn't appreciate it that much. They still could have gotten the lead out in spots, but they excised a little too much that made that intro special.

I liked DW7's intro. At the time I was getting burned out on turn-based battles, and I was really impressed that you didn't actually get into a fight for at least an hour.

Sounds like DQ7's original long intro wasn't a "mistake" then after all.

I'm closing in on 80 hours in New Vegas, no idea how long I'll be playing it honestly, could easily go over 100. So I'm going to go ahead and start playing Crystal Warriors during my downtime at work. Small bite sized SRPGs are better than nothing, and this theme deserves some love.

Crystal Warriors should be perfect for that. Pretty fast-paced and light on story.

It doesn't count unless it's on a legit Game Gear so you can squint at the terrible screen and blow through AA batteries like nobody's business. (Don't do that.)

Once upon a time I actually had a real Game Gear. The screen was rather terrible, and I always played it using the A/C adapter. I didn't have a lot of games for it, but the best one I had was Tails Adventure. I ended up giving that Game Gear to my younger brother, and he eventually gave it to my daughter years later. Then she left batteries in it for too long, and they corroded, and something fried in the circuitry. So we sold it on eBay.
I'm currently reading the Crystal Warriors manual:
Might crack at it this afternoon.

I remember when you sold that, actually. I've still got a Game Gear as well; even played through Defenders of Oasis on it. Mine was the Majesco re-release, which has a slightly better screen, but it's still junk compared to anything remotely resembling modern, or even the old reflective screens they used for the GBC/GBA. I used an adapter, too, and specifically my Genesis Model 2 power supply.
I bet your old one had bad caps. The original run was notorious for having them crap out. There probably aren't many out there working that haven't been recapped at this point.
Thinking of screens, I saw where BennVenn is putting out a backlit screen for Game Boy Color. I'm actually very, very tempted to snag one. $60 for a solder-less solution seems pretty sweet. Of course, since I don't have a GBC, the cost difference between that and an AGS-101 might not be much different...
