I'd be really surprised if you didn't like King's Field IV. I mean, even I liked it.

I'd be really surprised if you didn't like King's Field IV. I mean, even I liked it. My story with KF4. I first played it in 2007. I remember taking a few steps, wondering why I turned so slowly, why my sword swung like molasses, then falling into a pit of lava and dying within one minute of starting the game. "Eh, I don't know about this one." Then put it away for years. Then in 2010 I gave a different FromSoftware first person dungeon crawler a chance. It was Eternal Ring. I started playing the game because on the Romhacking forums Gideon Zhi proclaimed Eternal Rings' controls were too archaic for the game to be enjoyable anymore. (Primarily that you have to use the shoulder buttons to look up and down, as opposed to the left analog stick.) I took that as a personal challenge and started playing Eternal Ring. Surprisingly I took to Eternal Ring quickly, probably because it moves more quickly than KF4 does. I ended up enjoying Eternal Ring quite a bit, and finished the game. (It's basically Jewel Master + King's Field.) After finishing Eternal Ring I decided to give KF4 (known as King's Field: The Ancient City in the USA) another chance. Well the same 2007 thoughts occurred initially, but I decided to give KF4 one solid hour this time. If I didn't enjoy it after an hour, I'd never play it again. Near the end of that first hour things started to "click". I continued playing. After the third hour I was in love with the game. It was an incredible adventure for my tastes. A brilliant mixture of dungeon crawling, horror exploration, and Japanese ingenuity. Finishing KF4 lead me to want to play the rest of the series. So I went back and started with KF1 (which never came to the USA). And from there finished KF1, KF2, KF3, KF3: Pilot Style, Shadow Tower and Shadow Tower Abyss. The cumulative experience of playing through all these games in the early 2010s was one of the greatest thrills I've had in my 38 years of playing video games. And none of it was based on nostalgia, Eternal Ring, KF, and the ST games were all new to me. Unfortunately as fantastic as FromSoftware's first person dungeon crawlers are, they simply aren't for everybody. Specifically they are not for impatient players needing fast action to stimulate their senses. But for me these games were absolute magic. I strongly recommend them to anyone that enjoys first person dungeon crawling/first person RPGs. If anyone wants to take the same path I did, Eternal Ring is on PS2 (so it's easily emulatable via PCSX2), and it's available for PS4 via the PSN store: store.playstation.com/en-us/product/UP1022-CUSA04654_00-SLUS200150000001/ That said Eternal Ring is merely "good" but KF4 is "freaking amazing".

bonesnapdeez It's a shame we have a decent translation of the bad SNES port of the first game, and truncated translations of the MSX versions of the first two, but not the version that easily outshines every other.

I actually like the game on SNES (though there are some issues, certainly) but yeah the PCE variant kills it. To me it's a bit like comparing Master System Ys to PCE Ys Book I & II. They aren't even close. Anyone else play Xak III? I beat it a couple of years ago. Really great game with a solid fan trans. Quite linear too, the map system is bit like Exile or Ys III where you use a cursor to select places on a world map, and the game continually steers you in the proper direction. I'd highly recommend it.

Yeah, I played Xak 3 first. It's a solid action RPG. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes the genre. The only thing that isn't translated are the anime cutscenes, but there's a text file with translations of those out there (gamefaqs, IIRC). I disliked the SNES Xak because of how much the switch in battle systems slows it down. It takes forever to level up now, which turns the game into one of the grindiest action RPGs I've ever played. I checked out the PCE version and there's no comparison.

I started playing Xak III when I first got my Duo, but I lost the save when Shape Shifter decided it needed to wipe all my saves. Whee! I should pick it back up, although it's very likely I will play on the MiSTer instead just to have more reliability.

Play it again. It's very linear, pretty easy and short. Simple enough to figure out with zero instructions/walkthrough.

bonesnapdeezAs I understand it, these three are playable in English (fan trans): You ever try them?
