Let's just go whole hog. As long as it is kept separate from the main retro section, I think it will be fine.

As long as it is kept separate from the main retro section, I think it will be fine. If the board votes yes to having a modern gaming section, it will be distinctly separate from the classic gaming section. We shall not cross the streams.

I say yes to a section for retro-styled modern games. Those two videos Xeogred posted look great (well, technically the ninja game has some ugly-ass environments, but the gameplay looks like it has the potential to be amazing), and I'd love to be able to discuss games like those without having to sift through a bunch of stuff I have no interest in (ie modern modern gaming). Those games clearly aim to be a direct continuation of the type of games we discuss here, so I think they're a natural fit. True modern-style games I feel could dilute this place's identity. I personally think it's pretty obvious what's a throwback and what isn't, and let's be real, there hasn't been much need to moderate stuff around here. We're all reasonable people. If we get the growth most of us want eventually, that might change, but we'll cross that bridge when we get there. Ex, here's my proposition: if you think the distinction between throwback modern and modern modern is going to be too much trouble, I volunteer to moderate that particular sub-forum. I would take a laid-back approach; if a reasonable case can be made that it's a genuinely retro-styled game, then that's good enough. And if, for whatever reason, the experiment doesn't work, we can just deal with it down the line.

I say yes to a section for retro-styled modern games. I vote for that too. To mitigate a moderation nightmare, I'd suggest tilting the new section "Retro-Styled Modern Games" and make it self-policing. I think all current members would respect that and newcomers would probably read the title and think, "Oh, I guess that's what we're supposed to talk about here."

Either way you cut it, I don't think modern gaming would get much discussion around here anyways. Chances are the few of us that do play modern games have sharpened out some specific tastes or series/developers we follow and if nobody has anything to add about X game, the topic probably isn't going anywhere. And it's not like there's any historical, philosophical, or personal stories that would really get brought up in this section. So I don't think this would dilute HRG or people would have to dig through a bunch of modern gaming topics just to find something they like. I'm with Sarge on this one, for simplicity sake a normal modern gaming forum that encompasses everything within the most recent 10 years I think would be most ideal.

Let's just go whole hog. As long as it is kept separate from the main retro section, I think it will be fine. This. Deciding what is or isn't "retro inspired" enough would be arbitrary and require micromanagement. Would From Software titles be off limits? Would interesting indies that don't fit in either category be kosher? I don't see the need to over-complicate things. Any thread where someone wants to bro-out about the latest AAA flavor of the week game would die on the vine here anyway if it even happens at all.

Oh God yes. Please do this. This board is already inundated with these "I'm playing ________ but can't talk about it because it's only 9.75 years old" posts. Just let natural discussion unfold, please.
And yeah, it should be "modern gaming" and not "modern-retro games" or whatever. That would lead to too many squabbles.

I mean, you could technically have a "modern games" and "retro-style" section.

Just let natural discussion unfold, please. In my experience "natural discussion" on a retro forum devolves into modern discussion drowning out the retro discussion. Time and time again, it happens to a disingenuous and detrimental degree. HRG's policies were intentionally created to avoid this pitfall. (You and I both know how much of a problem this became on a certain other forum.)
So to be crystal clear. We are not voting to be able to just talk about modern games intertwined with retro games willy-nilly. We are talking about splitting the board into two unique sections: One section would be for 10 year or older games, following the existing rule.
The other section would be for modern games that are less than 10 years old. This is the best compromise I'm willing to make, should you all vote it as such.
Right now it seems more members are leaning towards "modern gaming in its entirety" versus "modern-retro games". Should the modern gaming section be voted in, I will look back at what everyone preferred, and act accordingly. IF we end up voting in a "modern-retro gaming" section only, I will take toei up on his offer to be its moderator. I personally do not want to have to constantly decide what is "retro-styled game design" and what isn't. Sounds like quite the pedantic rabbit hole IMO.

I know I'm new and everything but if we would require someone to have to closely moderate a section and have to make a bunch of rules for it, it doesn't become fun then. I like the simple retro one here where we can talk about basically any games 10+ years old.
