I still need to play more Rollcage Stage II. I bought it on PSX back in the day, but didn't put a lot of time into it for whatever reason. Probably the same as all the others; too many RPGs! It's great fun. I still need to play the original myself: Like RC2, RC1 also released for PC as well.

I assume the PC version is superior?

I assume the PC version is superior? I would imagine it would be graphically superior; allowing for cleaner polys, higher framerates, and increased resolutions. That was true for the PC version of Rollcage: Stage II at least. Edit: PS Sarge if you were going to play RC:S2 on PC, I recommend this version: codemonkey.me.uk/rollcage_extreme.php

I feel like I should mention two of my favorite retro racers of all time, the Super Monaco GP games on the Genesis. The first game is a classic with its World Championship mode that starts you in a mediocre car with a medicore team. You have to continually beat your chosen rival (who usually has some charming badly translated snark for you) to earn points towards the championship and get offered a job driving for their team after beating them twice. This gives you access to their better car until you end up driving for the top team, "Madonna," a stand in for the at the time nigh-unbeatable McLaren F1 team. After winning the championship you play a second season where you're challenged by G. Ceara who is obviously meant to be real life champion Aryton Senna. You most likely lose in a race that's nearly impossible to win and are kicked from the team, leaving you to come back from your loss and beat Ceara for the championship. It was really shocking at the time to think you've beaten the game, only to get slapped across the face with a demoralizing loss. The game can be pretty difficult since a single crash means defeat, but it's arcadey enough that it's simple to get a handle on and passwords mean you've got infinite tries if you screw up too badly. There's something very engrossing about clawing your way to the top and blowing away your opponents in the fastest car on the track once you get there.
The sequel is similar with a little more polish in the direction of realism and not as good music but what makes it special is the endorsement and design input of Aryton Senna himself, one of the greatest race car drivers in history. I admit to having more nostalgia and love for the first game, but this is a very special title especially for F1 fans. Both of these games together got me interested in the sport of Formula One and especially its colorful and lengthy history, something I had zero interest in beforehand. They're the perfect blend of arcade and simulation, exciting Sega racers with more meat on their bones than most thanks to their excellent World Championship modes.

more meat on their bones than most thanks to their excellent World Championship/Senna GP modes. That was an entertaining and informative read, thanks @gunstargreen . I also enjoyed watching the video you posted (poor flag guy). I'm not sure, but maybe this game and its sequel were an influence on Codemasters' TOCA series: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TOCA_(series)A lot of those racers have integrated storylines. Another racing game with a plot I remember is Namco's 2003 R: Racing Evolution. (This game also released on Xbox and GameCube.) R:RE offers a story mode where the player follows the racing career of Rena Hayami, as she struggles to deal with the busy life of a professional race car driver, and the politics of the sport. The mode features 14 chapters, in which the player earns new cars, RP points for new purchases, and views CG movies proceeding every chapter. I enjoy when developers mix in a story mode into sports games. Just gives the whole thing more of a sense of purpose.

anayo Always great to see another F-Zero fan around. Best racing series ever! Show me ya' moves! Ahhh 6 year old me would have loved this! I don't think I've ever had a game imprint negatively on me. Although one time when I was in high school I was watching The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. I used to like that movie, but at the time I had the flu. I fell asleep and had a f'd up fever dream that blended together with the movie. It gave me the movie equivalent of a taste aversion and I didn't want to watch LoEG anymore after that. Thanks, I added those to my want list on vgcollect.

Anyone play Wacky Races on the Dreamcast? I was looking at prices and was shocked it is going for $70. Doubt I'll get it even close to that price, but I am still curious about it, how it plays, how it compares to Mario Kart, etc.

I'd love to be proven wrong but I always thought Wacky Races was just a ho-hum "nobody has done this genre on this platform yet so let's make one" game.

I haven't played Wacky Races... at least not on Dreamcast. I've played through the NES game a couple of times, though.
