Yeah, those are all so good, I can see myself replaying them and in some cases already have.
Odallus is maybe a stretch for that list... I really enjoyed it but compared to the rest there, I'm not sure if it's one I'd revisit. I'd hit up Curse of the Moon over that one now.
Hyper Light Drifter came to mind, but I think I'd just say I liked it rather than loved it, and it didn't really invoke a vibe like the rest of these.
Xeodrifter was another one on my Steam list I enjoyed, but it's not top tier or anything. I'm sure there's some others here and there.
I kind of want to jump into another one right away, but they don't always make them like The Messenger... anything after that might feel like a downgrade for awhile.

Yeah, Odallus was a little lower on my list, but still a lot of fun. I'd still say it's a great game, though.
I liked Hyper Light Drifter as well, although again, probably in the 8/10 bucket. Xeodrifter is just super solid, but it might not quite make my list.
One I didn't expect to love as much as I did was 1001 Spikes. The very definition of a troll platformer, but I really got into it, and loved how they implemented two different jump heights on separate buttons.

I liked Hyper Light Drifter as well, although again, probably in the 8/10 bucket. chibby bought this for me on gog and even sat me down for a demonstration. I haven't given it the quality time it deserves yet, although it does deserve it.

Hey, I liked Hyper Light Drifter a lot. I think Katana Zero fits as well. I enjoyed this one a lot, too. There's also this lesser known horror metroidvania. Didn't finish it because no map and some obtuse game design choices, but top notch atmosphere.

But yeah, no crazy platforming, no limited continues, etc. You won't catch me playing Contra: Shattered Soldier or doing a legit Ghost 'n Goblins run. Even games like Super Metroid, while I like a lot of things about it, I still get super annoyed at the platforming, especially wall jumping and then that freaking quicksand section.

I'll still recommend Environmental Station Alpha. Very much Metroid, with some chunky graphics, but it played great.

I'm playing Blazing Chrome, and it is a really good take on Contra. I'm consistently impressed with the care put into the background art and visual effects. It surprises me how much extra flair the game has when might you look at a screenshot and see a pure 2d pixel artstyle with a certain sprite resolution and expect all the other graphical details to match that era. Blazing Chrome has higher production values than the big boy developers were putting into 2D before it died out. The game puts the fight against the robots thematically ahead of its alien enemies, which feels right. It makes for a good, simple story setting and effective character building. I felt it was unique enough from its inspiration series. Lots of the bosses recapture the feeling of memorable Contra fights. Slicing up plain old robot soldiers and ninjas with your melee swing feels satisfying too. The melee swing feels like it can have astounding range at times, but I think I don't understand some undiscovered nuance about it that makes it not activate all the time for me. The main character's sprite is a new favorite. I love the chrome visor that gives a headband-esque aesthetic at a glance, the long flowing hair that animates when you run and jump, and the bubble gum blowing idle pose. I've beaten the game on normal after one day's worth of sessions, and this difficulty feels extremely generous despite being tough enough to be thoroughly enjoyable. The stages don't feel as relentless as I was expecting, and having infinite continues at every checkpoint while autosaving between sessions feels like a big gift. I don't know, but something just feels "right" when you are forced to start over completely after a long enough session, whether due to limited continues or the internal feeling of wanting to shut the game off. I'll be working on hardcore difficulty next. Oh, and since my controller wasn't recognized properly I learned this game has very poor input configuration. You can't remap the direction buttons on your gamepad and no keyboard input is accepted by the game when a gamepad is plugged in. So it is literally impossible to use joy2key workarounds, and navigating the menus using the half-broken gamepad is a pain while you try to investigate. Bad design that leads to a terrible first impression that is entirely preventable. Ultimately, I finally learned what the "x360ce" tool is all about and that solved everything.
