Seems like it's only going to be one level, too. There's also a mini-game related to Company of Heroes (which Sega owns) that also seems to suck.

I finished a game from 2017 called Thy Sword. It looks like a single-screen platformer, but it's really more a hack-n-slash. Basically, each area consist of a bunch of single-screen maps where you have to kill all the enemies to move on. You can pick up gold to buy some items and weapons in tiny towns between areas (though there really aren't that many weapons - a few swords and a few bows, and it's entirely possible to finish the game with you starting gear). It does get monotone if you play too much of it at once, but it's pretty solid overall, with good controls and a nice overall feel. Combat is simple but well-done, with blocking and a special decapitation move that grants extra loot. I liked it. Beat it on Adventurer mode, which gives you 3 credits. The default mode lets you just go on from the same level with infinite credits, but I think it's more motivating with some limits.

Huh, looks interesting. The super-pixelated style reminds me of Elliot Quest.

Streets of Kamurocho is just a mini-game after all. It's literally just the first level of Streets of Rage 2 with re-drawn graphics, and the new graphics aren't very good. It really doesn't look like a legit 2D take on Yakuza or Tokyo (it was made by some indie studio with a spotty track record, not the Yakuza team). The level just loops when you beat it, with more enemies I think. You can play as Kazuma, Majima, or Ichiban (the new guy from Yakuza 7)... but they're all Axel. Pretty lame. That's disappointing, yet somehow unsurprising. When I read the headlines about that something deep inside me said that it was too good to be true. I didn't listen, though, because I wanted Streets of Kamurocho to be awesome.

Huh, looks interesting. The super-pixelated style reminds me of Elliot Quest. The devs are apparently big Amiga fans, and some of the music has that Commodore 64 sound, so that whole scene is probably a big inspiration too. The 2-player mode is also pretty cool.

I started playing The Messenger, and I don't like it. I like side-scrollers that are more about fighting than jumping, and I tend to hate platforming gimmicks. This game is all about its platforming gimmicks (ie gliding, etc.), while enemies mostly just stand around waiting to die. Meanwhile, that rock boss' patterns feel random and super annoying. So I think I should just drop it now before I get sick of it.

I thought it would be like an awesome 16-bit version of Ninja Gaiden for the NES, but it just feels like a high budget flash game.

I don't think that at all, but then again, different strokes. I know Xeogred was a big fan, too, so I know I'm not sitting here on an island with my love for the game. I can totally see why toei didn't care for it, though, given the way he described it. I'm much more of a platforming hound in terms of the actual jumping than many, so it makes sense that I'd like the game a lot more.

Yeah, one of the best games I've played this year. And come'on, the Temple of Time Golem boss was one of the best parts of the entire game to me! I'm glad he wasn't a pushover. The second half of the game is different but I don't think it'll be enough to win over people who hate it up to that point.

Sorry for sounding disparaging. I'm actually jealous of those who did enjoy the game, which is apparently the majority of people who played it, since it got really high review scores.
