There isn't enough of interest in the world or any story to make the non-linear elements really worth it, so it mostly just amounts to an unfocused beat-'em-up where you just waste some time wandering and grinding. Yep that's how I remember RCR NES. I was also bothered by how little variety there was in location and enemy aesthetics. I'll say on a positive note, said game has a good sense of humor at least.

Oh, yeah, that four-player arena fighter is one of the absolute gems of the NES library.

A new PC horror game has released that uses a Game Boy aesthetic:

Kunio-kun is a fairly weak series; that may end up being the best of the bunch. $30 for a download though....... We'll see. Yeah, I'm in the same boat. I'd like to play it but I'm certainly not paying 30 bucks for it. I have a soft spot for the Kunio-kun games but I won't deny a lot of them are mediocre.

Eh, the graphics are super uninspired (as is the game's concept, honestly), so I'm not too surprised. Also, this wasn't made by Sega, but by some small indie team whose others works don't seem all that great. I guess Atlus had published their last game, so now this is coming out under Sega.

It was too good to be true I guess. I was feeling sketchy just based off the visual style and all, oh well. Blazing Chrome is all that matters now... going to watch that trailer for the 10th time tonight!

Well, I ran across someone over on Talking Time that says to ignore the reviews, and that they are having a good time. So... mileage may vary.
Honestly, on paper, ActRaiser isn't all that, either. Certainly, a game with its action sequences alone or sim elements alone would not be very well received. But those feed into each other incredibly well, and make it a game that ends up being much better than either of those elements separately. Also, that soundtrack is très magnifique.

I liked the sim parts, though I guess they're too simple to constitute a full game. By the end you're just repeating the same formula with every new land. The side-scroller parts are not very good, though.
