This thread is meant to be a catch all, for discussing modern video games you've recently beaten. That is to say talking about your experiences in recently finishing a video game that is less than ten years old. Let us know how it went, and what you think overall!

24. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (PC)
Alright, the modern uncensored material has been revealed. AMA. This has been a good year for me, easy to say I've got a cemented top 4 modern games list so far: 1. Resident Evil 2 Remake 2. Sekiro 3. Devil May Cry 5 4. Bloodstained I'm conflicted on DMC5 vs Bloodstained... I'm a freaking huge fan of the legacy of both and these two knocked it out of the park.
Let me be honest, I think Bloodstained is JUST as good, if not better than the classic Igavania titles. I love that it had a bit more teeth to it compared to SoTN and I had to be careful and backtrack to save a few times. Still nothing quite as hard as Order of Ecclesia, but yeah. Seriously, since that game and SoTN are still fresh in mind from the last year or two, I feel like I can really make some good fair comparisons and I think Bloodstained just blew me away. I'm usually immediately against 2.5D games too visually, but I think this might be my favorite one ever, there are some super cool looking levels midway in and some neat tricks they could do in a 3D engine. The music is admittedly not as strong as Michiru Yamane's older works, but there were still some really good themes here and there. The credits theme had me giddy too, it was just so cozy. I have no complaints whatsoever, it was incredible and worth the long wait. Iga's still got it.
I DID have to look up a thing or two near the end to keep going, but yeah. I've also still got a few secret bosses and things to do, so I'm not done yet.

Nice. I'm not far behind you on Bloodstained. I've been pulling one or two hours a night into it since release day. Let's see... >I think Bloodstained is JUST as good, if not better than the classic Igavania titles. I'm not quite convinced that it beats SotN or OoE, but it's in the same tier as them. Easily better than every other Igavania I didn't just mention. Really Bloodstained is like Order of Ecclesia II for all intents and purposes. No complaints there. >Still nothing quite as hard as Order of Ecclesia That's my one big complaint with Bloodstained. The game has been a cakewalk on Normal difficulty. But, I've not beaten it yet. Maybe it'll get harder at the end. And if we're being honest, outside OoE all of the Igavania's have been easy games. >there are some super cool looking levels midway in and some neat tricks they could do in a 3D engine I keep reading people say this game's graphics suck. What a bunch of horseshit. I think that the PC version at highest resolution with all graphic settings maxed out looks outstanding. I think the PS4 version is right up there too. Now the Switch version on the other hand, yeah not so hot. There's a lot of great graphical direction going on, especially with the backgrounds. SO much detail in every room and hallway. >The music is admittedly not as strong as Michiru Yamane's older works Unfortunately I also agree there. The music is entirely competent, but I've not yet heard a track that made me stop playing and just listen. >Iga's still got it. Yep. Unlike poser ass Inafune, this dude's legit. This game ain't Mighty No. 9 all over again, thankfully. >I DID have to look up a thing or two near the end to keep going, but yeah. There have been two parts that were total BS on that aspect:
How was I supposed to know to take my photo to OD to get a passport for the train? WTF? I don't recall anyone telling me that in the game.
And locking progress behind a randomly acquired shard power is bad game design, period. I'm talking about having to get the squid shard so you can move around in the water. I went through that area three times and never got that shard. Had to read up to find out what the hell. That was the complete opposite of intuitive.

5) Shadow of the Tomb Raider (PS4) (8.5) (1/12) (35 hours) 8) Jake Hunter: Ghost of the Dusk (3DS) (7.5) (1/14) (17.5 hours) 10) Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom (NS) (8.5) (1/23) (20 hours) 11) Mega Man 11 (NS) (8.0) (1/26) (3.75 hours) 13) God of War (PS4) (10.0) (2/7) (40 hours?) 39) Pixel Puzzle Challenge (AND) (7.5) (5/6) (40 hours?) 46) Fight'N Rage (PC) (8.0) (6/2) (2.5 hours)
Surprisingly few modern games beaten so far this year. But you can see that 10.0 by God of War. I could not believe how fantastic that game was, and I just think the prior games are good, not amazing. It's basically an ARPG now.

Out of curiosity I'll post all the games I've beaten this year so far:
1. Children of Mana - Nintendo DS 2. Dragonstomper - Atari 2600 3. Venture - ColecoVision 4. Ys: Memories of Celceta - PlayStation Vita 5. Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere - PlayStation 6. For the Frog the Bell Tolls - Game Boy 7. Tougi Ou: King Colossus - SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis 8. Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X - Xbox 360 9. Sonic the Hedgehog - SEGA Master System 10. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - SEGA Master System 11. Power Strike II - SEGA Master System 12. Rastan - SEGA Master System 13. Sonic Chaos - SEGA Master System 14. Fantasy Zone - SEGA Master System 15. Ninja Gaiden - SEGA Master System 16. Dragon Crystal - SEGA Master System 17. Virtua Fighter Animation - SEGA Master System 18. Deep Duck Trouble Starring Donald Duck Sega - SEGA Master System 19. Lightning Warrior Raidy II - Windows 20. Super Mario Land DX - Game Boy 21. Godzilla: Kaijuu Daishingeki (Godzilla: Monsters Attack) - SEGA Game Gear 22. Luminous Arc - Nintendo DS 23. Disaster Report - PlayStation 2
Of that list only one game is newer than 10 years old; Ys: Memories of Celceta.
I'm clearly not on track to beat 100 games this year my dudes. One of the reasons for less beats than normal, is because of how much time I've sunk into Fallout: New Vegas. I've got over 80 hours in that one! Which for me is a lot of hours. I'm currently trying to finish all of its DLC before beating the game. What slows me down further, is trying to get 100% location discovery. There are a LOT of locations in Fallout: New Vegas - Ultimate Edition. I will finish it at some point this year. But I want to finish Bloodstained and Nostalgia first.

SO much detail in every room and hallway. >Iga's still got it. Yep. Unlike poser ass Inafune, this dude's legit. This game ain't Mighty No. 9 all over again, thankfully. OoEII for sure. I'm guessing Iga himself comes up with some of these characters and I have to say, he does badass females really well. I like Miriam a lot. Also, I don't think we need a deluge of Bloodstained sequels, but I love how both this and Curse of the Moon left off with a lot of potential for more and I definitely want more. In fact, I was thinking if they did another side story or prequel, something in the 16bit vein next time would be cool. And maybe another big sequel to Ritual wouldn't take as long to make, now that they've got this one down. On the difficulty, in ways I feel a bit guilty on abusing some of the insane DPS drill type shards... the Inferno Breath from that Cerberus boss fight and then there's that sword drill shard. Powers like these make some bosses a joke, but I've seen some players doing the Mario stomp with boots that wrecks things too. From what I've seen at the end game though, some of the secret bosses might be really hard so that's fun. The gold treasury looking area has to be one of my favorites ever, in like all of Castlevania too. I love how the lightning effects work in this too from the torches and stuff, especially in the caves. Yeah, the graphics rock!
I was going to joke about that too, I'm so glad this wasn't another Mighty No 9 case and honestly, it sounded like Bloodstained had a real steep uphill battle for years. Mighty No 9 didn't help anyone's expectations for one of the earlier Kickstarter games and the reception for Bloodstained at conferences for years sounded really underwhelming. So many studios were involved too which I'm sure was chaos as well. But I bet Iga grew up in this kind of stress haha, I know he's just one man and doesn't take all the credit, but surely his key involvement here was a game changer and the difference maker between a real game designer/director vs a businessman/producer like Inafune. I guess if there's one minor complaint that comes to mind now, the voice acting is kind of average outside of Miriam and a few characters to me. David Hayter sounds like he's just totally phoning it in. SoTN's original voice acting is hilarious with charm, but a product of its time. I'm not sure if they were trying to force in some cheese here too, but I found myself just reading the dialogue to skip through some conversations quicker at points. I'll have to play in Japanese next time and see how that goes. EDIT: This is the area I loved visually.

Xeogred>I feel a bit guilty on abusing some of the insane DPS drill type shards I've been using True Arrow a lot, but a very powered up True Arrow. I mean that shard lets you unleash four arrows at once into an enemy, over and over again as fast as you can unload. Right now I do like 50-60 damage per arrow, times four, with each hit. And you can unleash about a hundred arrows before your magic meter depletes fully. That, combined with Welcome Company, the shard that makes portraits appear around you circling. I've got Welcome Company powered up massively too. So I can just stand next to a boss with Welcome Company hitting it over and over, while unloading True Arrows at the same time. That makes mince meat out of bosses pronto thus far. There are tons of cool weapons in this game, but I tend to use the Flying Edge types. I like ranged offense here. >Yeah, the graphics rock! I agree. Here's one of my favorite areas: >Iga grew up in this kind of stress haha I think so too. From all I've ever read, working at Konami was really hard and stressful. Kojima made that point clear many times. >David Hayter sounds like he's just totally phoning it in Yes I agree. For one thing Hayter's still just doing the Solid Snake voice. I mean really? You're acting as a samurai character from the orient, but that's the tonal inflection you use? Also ever since Peace Walker, Hayter has been using a super raspy version of his Solid Snake voice, and that extra raspiness grates on my nerves quickly. I know it's sacrilege and uncool to say, but I don't blame Kojima/Konami for using Kiefer Sutherland in MGS5. Hayter's Snake voice had become a parody of itself. >I found myself just reading the dialogue to skip through some conversations quicker at points I always do this with games. I read quickly, so I've usually read the entire conversational paragraph's subtitles before the voice actor has finished the first few words. So I automatically press the Next button to keep on going. With games that have really good voice acting, I'll actually disable the subtitles (if the game lets you), so I'm forced to actually listen to the actors instead of flying through the subtitles.

Yup, another area that really showcased the lighting effects.
I agree Hayter's been bad since Peace Walker, even if I loved that game. Some of my friends joke and rumors go that maybe MGS4 completely messed his voice up, it's certainly possible. But it sounded like he just gargled a lot of coffee or something. Age is a thing too... and maybe just a lack of passion for voice acting now, I don't know. Definitely would have been better to have someone else do Zangestu, like you said, for a samurai dude that doesn't really fit with it at all.
I used True Arrow a lot early game haha. To be fair, I think it's easy to exploit a lot of stuff in all of these Igavania's and players seem to find their own tricks, that's part of the fun. Even OoE has some cheesy setups. Speaking of, I still would love another game to utilize the dual weapons idea that OoE had, it's so fun to mash those back and forth.

I tend to agree, I don't think his voice suits the character. I like Hayter, though.
Plot-wise, it made sense to use a different voice actor for MGS5. For those that have actually finished the game, y'all know what I mean.

I agree Hayter's been bad since Peace Walker, even if I loved that game. I thought Peace Walker was pretty good. My wife and I beat it via co-op on PSP back in 2014. But I liked the game enough that I bought the PS3 version of it to replay someday solo. Because of the way the equipment screen is, I thought that was going to be possible in this Igavania:
