I did hear about that and from what I dug up awhile back (people seemed to be running into a lot of issues when Tetris 99 came out), it kind of just sounds like luck of the draw. So far the two Pro controllers I have seem totally fine, so... hopefully I'm good. Either way, this d-pad seems more ideal than the Xbox One pad I was using for Steam indie stuff. Definitely had way better control playing Blazing Chrome tonight and every input is crucial, heh.
When it comes to emulation I love using the replica controllers, the newer Retrobit Genesis controller is amazing and I want to get the Saturn variant eventually. And for Nintendo gaming, the Buffalo is downright awesome.

I know Ex isn't crazy about these, but the most critically-claimed "kinetic" VNs turned out to be my favorite VNs overall: planetarian, eden*, Harmonia. They're just all well-written stories..... However, they're also all post-apocalyptic and feature "non-human" female characters. Talk about tropes.
I really tried to get into the Higurashi series. It starts off great but veers into some really questionable territory. It's of those stories that would have turned out better had it been grounded in reality. The supernatural elements are capriciously inserted and just drag the whole thing down.

That being said, my SN30 Pro isn't much better; I need to crack it open and do a fix on it as well. I am thinking about snagging one of those Hori D-Pad Left Joy-Cons. I saw it on Amazon for $15, and while it only works in handheld mode, it sure does seem ideal for 2D stuff, especially if I decide to hit up the NES/retro side more.

I almost exclusively use my Switch in handheld since it’s really tough these days to be able to set time aside to sit down and play anything for an extended period of time. I would maybe get that Hori controller, but I feel like the Dpad might be in an awkward location to rely on for 2D gaming. Most indies I get luckily play fine with a joystick. But if you ever get one, I’d love to hear your thoughts, since I’d definitely use it if you find it worthwhile. Since I need portability these days, I generally play all my retro stuff on my Wii U, which I hacked to play pretty much every console from the Atari 2600 through to the PSX. And the Dpad on the gamepad is probably Nintendo’s best since the SNES, thankfully.

If they weren’t $70 I might grab one, but at that price I’d rather just try to play everything with the Joy cons.

Only reason I have two Switch Pro controllers is because the second one was on some crazy sale when Smash dropped. I wonder how well the Wii U Pro controller works with Steam and everything though? I liked how the layout of that one was like an SNES controller too. Never had an issue with mine, though that glossy finish is annoying. Might try using it next time.
Anyways, after 5 hours total I've conquered Blazing Chrome and beat hardcore today. Shocking, because I wasn't doing too hot on the first two levels this run and then got two game overs along the way. But I spent so much time on the last boss on Normal, I had that down too well haha. Was a little disappointed there wasn't some true super final boss on hardcore, but oh well. Still felt super badass. There's also a Boss Rush mode and a mirror mode which is probably super bizarre. I bet this would be incredible co-op with a buddy.
Also the credits theme is "Dangerous Zone" and one of the best credits themes ever.
Looking forward to when you guys hit it up.

Blazing Chrome and beat hardcore today What differences did "hardcore" mode bring/make? I got the GOG version due to your praise. For now it shall sit on top of the pile sitting on top of the pile sitting on top of the pile of games "I'd like to play someday".

Initially you only have access to Easy and Normal. Easy gives you something like 7 lives and infinite continues, along with some "help capsules" that I don't have a clue on. I actually ran through Easy with one of the unlockable ninja characters and never saw one of these. Enemies were weaker and boss phases were a little different, less enemies on screen that help out or whatever. On Normal you get 5 lives and infinite continues, but no "helping capsules". Enemies seem tougher I guess, but I played Normal first.
Hardcore is basically Contra mode. You start with 3 lives and only have 3 continues. You never get extra continues that I noticed, but score can gain you some lives along with one hidden per level if you've got the right equipment to get it. On top of the more advanced boss phases and speed, the cooler thing here was how much stronger enemies were too, you can't just casually run through some mobs and can only "push back" for the first hit or few on most of them. So this made the entire run pretty intense and trial and error, just like Contra. I wish this mode was unlocked from the start, but oh well.
It's definitely interesting how this was from the same guys that did Oniken and Odallus. I didn't like Oniken much, but they seem to be getting better and better.
