It loosens up on that after awhile. And the BFG edition has flashlights on the guns along with a new sprint feature (I think?). I like Doom 3, but yeah it's more like a Bioshock kind of thing.
Go into 2016 and Eternal expecting something like Quake meets Devil May Cry. lol, 10x different than Doom 3 but still quite different from the originals too though. I think it even has some of the Quake powerups like Quad Damage/Haste and such.

I beat the Nintendo Switch version of Doom 2016. I thought it was a step in the right direction as I haven't been crazy about what FPSs have turned into since the late 2000s. At the same time, I was ready for it to end when it ended and I have no desire to ever play it again.

I feel comfortable talking about 90's FPSs, but I might need to spend some more time playing 21st century FPSs as a refresher first. Or at least skimming some playthroughs of prominent ones I have played (like Bioshock, Crysis, Gears of War II, Turok 2008, Doom 2016, etc.)

Gears isn't first person. I think the immersive sim has been healthy enough quality wise*, even some of the lesser games like Thief 4 are still nothing I'd call outright bad and are above average compared to a lot of modern games. I'm a Bioshock fan and love the trilogy myself. The new Deus Ex games are also awesome, even if they're not revolutionary like the original. Some surprises like Alien Isolation, to me the best thing in Alien since the first two movies. And then there's Dishonored 1-2, the true successor to old Thief, along with Arkane's Prey. Those Arkane games are phenomenal classics that I know will age extremely well and already have, Dishonored 1 being a 2012 game I believe. Some of the open world stuff somewhat fits here too, like Fallout New Vegas, a modern classic for sure. *Too bad the immersive sims sell horribly though. Too niche' for the mainstream. The arena styled design just isn't much of a thing anymore. Nor do we even really get good linear campaigns like Half-Life 2 or FEAR much thesedays either. There's still some here and there, maybe Shadow Warrior's reboots scratches the classic itch (I need to dig more into them), and some people like the modern Wolfenstein's a lot... I think they're okay.
I think the new Doom's are awesome though and even scratch a bit of a Metroid Prime itch. It's fun to platform around and fully explore those levels for all the secrets. I wish we'd get a Quake campaign reboot instead of the online only Champions thing going on right now. Still won't say I love Mick Gordon's take on the music with them though, bit too much dubstep influences for my tastes at times.

While Gears isn't first-person, I put it in the same bucket as Vanquish, Brute Force, or Metal Arms - they play like an FPS, so I still think of them as such even if they're technically not.

Lost Planet would fit that then. The modern 3D Contra's in a way.

It's worth noting that Shin Megami Tensei IV and IV Apocalypse are available digitally on the eshop, for just $19.99 and $29.99. I actually kind of like the idea of going digital with a little handheld. Not always per se, but it's another option and I need to remember to price check the differences. Hopefully this is a savior for some 3DS games that are spiking in prices... but alas, can't expect these servers to stay up forever either.
Even loose carts for these are going for $80-90+.
Did any of you here play Infinite Space?
