I hasn’t noticed this thread until now. I am currently looking forward to
1. Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom 2. Ys X 3. Dragon Quest III 2D-HD remake 4. Dragon Quest XII
I’m most excited for TotK. Even though I maintain that BotW is less of a Zelda game and more of something else, I still loved it enough to replay it multiple times under different conditions (like beating master mode without visiting any shrines). I’m hoping for more labyrinthine dungeons, I’d especially like to see more keys used in dungeons. That said, I tried Second Wind for BotW and it demonstrates why the shrines and divine beasts are structured the way they are in the official game: the camera kills itself in tight corridors. Even Hyrule Castle’s corridors are wide by comparison to the fan mod’s structures. That said, I appreciated having more natural environments within the shrines themselves, something I’d like to see in TotK. I’d also like to see a sort of “weapon repair” system. I don’t want to see the weapon durability system go away, however! Instead, something like having a shard of your broken weapon be left behind that you can use to take to a weapon smith in order to create a new one. Essentially, say your broadsword with + attack up broke. It’ll shatter and split into maybe a couple of broadsword pieces and a + attack up shard; when you bring enough of either or both you can either create a new broadsword or create another weapon (or this broadsword) with the + attack up shard. I think this could be a good compromise between the gripes people have with the durability system and the game’s structure of constantly finding new equipment. Another thing I would like to see return are dungeon items. BotW kind of has them in the form of abilities but you gain them after a divine beast is over and they are a bit underwhelming (although Revali’s gale is great). I miss using a hookshot to get around, for example. I understand why they’re not in BotW but I miss them nevertheless.
I’m tentatively excited for Ys X. I’ve discovered a love for Ys in the middle of last year and have been hooked since. While I still have to get through Ys VIII and IX to see if I’m still interested in the series, X appears to be undergoing a major system change that brings the gameplay back to focusing on Adol albeit with a partner. I prefer the adventures where Adol is the sole adventurer but I have learned to like the party based system of Seven and MoC. I just hope it’s not some 70 hour epic that modern games seem so fond of. I’d like it to be no longer than 40- less than 30 would be ideal. That said, I know there are people who would complain about that length, so maybe just have a lot of side content for people who want more bang for their buck.
Dragon Quest III is one of my favorites in the series. I’m not completely sold on the 2D-HD trend started with Octopath Traveller. I see it and I immediately think “how does Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger still manage to look better than this?” On the other hand, I recognize that it isn’t ugly either. My main issue is that they have all looked rather dark and dreary… until Dragon Quest III 2D-HD was revealed! It looks brighter and more inviting than Octopath Traveller! Since this is a remake, I’m hoping they add some things to it, mainly skills from the older games into this version. Warriors and martial artists don’t gain skills in any version of DQ3 while merchants and thieves gain magic that should be skills. Also, in the 30+ years that Dragon Quest has been around, it has gained new vocations. Granted, many of these vocations can be recreated in DQ3 by virtue of just changing from one vocation to the next. What can set them apart are the skills I mentioned, however. There’s precedent for something like this in DQ3 already. You already need the book of sages or the Satori tome to change into a sage or previously be a jester. Something similar can be done for other vocations. Have a warrior’s seal that allows a character to become a gladiator or a pirate flag that allows them to turn into a pirate. Stuff like that. Another thing I’d like to see is party chat! Party chat gives your party more character and makes them more than just a collection of numbers. DQ3 already has a personality system. It’ll be a nightmare to write and localize for but I feel like the result can be well worth it. Even if they end up just saying the same thing in different intonations, like a vamp character saying “We should head to Najimi tower, purr” and a jock character saying “We should to Najimi tower, bro” would go a long way (and this is just the laziest implementation; ideally, they’d say the same things in widely different ways and at least give out more than just the one hint at a time).
There’s not much known about Dragon Quest XII so it’s difficult to talk about it. All we know is that it’ll be more “adult”. I don’t know what they mean by this, though. I find that anytime a creator tries to make their work “adult” it ends up becoming childish, childishly adding in tons of out of place gore, profanity, and sexual content. None of these will hinder a work if used properly, of course, but they often tend to be used excessively (especially for shock value) with no substance attached. Plus, I’d rather escape to a bright and colorful world of wizards and warriors than be reminded of reality’s constant flirtation with all-encompassing doom and fruitless blame. Plus, if DQ12 is going to be more adult then does that mean DQ11 was for children? Sure, it has some silly tropes more commonly found in kids’ and teens’ stories but it’s not done in any excessive way. My hope is that DQ12 will star an older cast and that’s the extent of the “adult” stuff about it. It might be fun for it to challenge the notion of the legendary hero (granted, a previous DQ game already does something like that) and have your character be a parent already? I don’t know. I’m just apprehensive of the use of “adult” as a marketing buzzword.
Edit: Honorable mention because I saw a Nintendo ad about it. Fire Emblem Engage. I skipped on Fire Emblem Three Houses because I didn’t actually enjoy the social stuff from Fire Emblem Fates and I did actually enjoy Fire Emblem Fates or that remake of Gaiden (not can I say that I enjoy Gaiden all that much). It dawned on me that I don’t particularly care about Fire Emblem all that much at this stage of my life. I loved the GBA one, however, with Eliwood, Hector, and especially Lyn. I actually replayed Lyn’s story not long ago and enjoyed it a ton despite it just being a tutorial. Anyway, all this is to say that I strangely felt a pull towards Fire Emblem Engage. I’m not sure that I’ll pick it up at launch, however. I’d like to focus my gaming efforts into Ys at the current moment and I’ve wanted to try out the Trails series as well. This might be yet another Nintendo game that’ll go into the “I’ll play it eventually” pile along with Xenoblade 2 and 3, other games that struck my interest but not enough for me to spend money and grab. That said, I’ve been mostly digital only for Switch out of convenience and space but physical versions seem to be cheaper sometimes. I might just say screw it and grab physical copies whenever they’re cheap. I’ve already been interested in remaking my digital collection in physical format- at least for the titles I especially like such as Link’s Awakening.

Yeah. This might be something I buy right away to support, but won't fret too much about finishing it anytime soon. Since I beat the DS version just a few years back, it's still fresh in mind.
FM2 is a dream come true though. And depending on how well these turn out, I think they're doing FM3 as well and if that looks better than the original, I could go this route for the Emma campaign. I still want to play that. Along with getting FM5 in sometime.

I'm interested in the FM3 remake too, as I still want to finish the other campaign (you and I did opposite campaign routes). My only concern is, if the remakes recycle assets from each remake to the next. That'd be a stale approach. I'd rather each remake have fresh assets.

Good point. We'll have to say how FM2 looks compared to this first one. But yeah, FM3 being a different console and all, the remake would have to look pretty different than these. Maybe they just play to smooth out the polygons and remaster that one in a different way. I wouldn't really complain, it still looked great to me. Faster loading and quality of life improvements would be cool enough.

I do expect a lot of asset reuse as well. But the OSTs should be unique at least. And I agree Xeogred that FM3 still looks great, especially via DuckStation.
