Where are you at with the series now? Pretty sure you beat 1-6 in one form or another. Did you play 8? Or you waiting to do 7 first? 8 is an exciting one. It's about as good a transition into full 3D for DQ as it could have been. Great game. 7 is still decent, just super long, and 9 is... maybe not bad, but it sure was lacking. Beat: DQ1-3 SFC DQ4-5 DS DQ6 SFC DQ8 PS2 DQ11 PS4 Favorites in these versions: DQ3, DQ4, DQ8, and DQ11. I liked DQ6 enough to get a copy of the ultra rare DS version, so I'll check that one out someday. I'm happy to know DQ7 3DS trims it down a tad. People talk about this one being the longest but I put in 120 hours into DQ11 or something. I'll be shocked if it's that long, or I want to do everything there too. DQ9 interests me... very little to be honest. Not like I'll ever be able to say I've "beaten every main line game" now thanks to the MMO either way. So I might just skip that one. I feel like instead of playing DQ9, I'd have more fun replaying some of my favorites again or checking out other versions. Biggest dream would have been DQ4 SFC, but if it gets this HD-2D treatment too that'll be awesome. I like the DS games but won't say I love the aesthetic compared to the others. DQ3/6 SFC were sublime visually and musically. I think DQ4's Maya, DQ in general, and SMT, have made me enjoy using magic users in JRPG's thesedays more than I used to.

I put 120 hours into DQ7, too, but it was the original version and I did the post-game content, which requires lots of grinding. 3DS version won't be as long as XI was for you, for sure. Maybe 70-75 hours, which is still quite long.

Man I'm so happy they kept it 2D. I put 120 hours into DQ7, too, but it was the original version and I did the post-game content, which requires lots of grinding. 3DS version won't be as long as XI was for you, for sure. Maybe 70-75 hours, which is still quite long. I completed 7 as well when it came it on PlayStation. I really liked it, although I'm not surprise people are displeased with the length. What makes 7 different, it is very episodic. You are playing pieces of a tablet, which is more like watching an episode of a TV series. Once you complete a piece of tablet, you can put it down for awhile and not be lost. I recall taking several breaks.

~70 is what I'm guessing too for the 3DS version. Which yeah, still feel a bit fatigued from all these long ass modern games lately. But I am getting the itch for another JRPG very soon. But I'm thinking about something on the Genesis...

Not many options on the Genesis, but the obvious one is Phantasy Star IV if you haven't played it. Both Shining Force games are excellent as well.

But frick, time sure is weird... this was somehow 2021 already. What!
Anyways.......... the game I'm thinking of playing soon is Phantasy Star II. So close enough. I probably still have my save from earlier this year when I started it up to sample some.
And no, I still haven't topped my 2021 Year of JRPG's. I'll probably never beat that lineup.

But I'm thinking about something on the Genesis... If we're talking about action-JRPGs... Tougi Ou: King Colossus or Light Crusader are worth it. Edit: Oh, yeah, for turn-based JRPG... Phantasy Star II is a must if you a real G.

Yeah I'm definitely feeling the itch for turn based. But dang, Light Crusader looks pretty cool and weird in a good way.

Ah, geez, that's right. Man, has it been that long? I can't be expected to remember all that, haha!
Are you going to play via the original balancing or the tweaked? I seem to remember you doing the latter when you tried it out. It would definitely take a lot of the dragginess out of it.
A lot of people crap on Phantasy Star III, but I think that's a fun one, too, even if it's a bit odd compared to the rest of the series. I'd at least give it a shot.
Light Crusader is quite weird. Solid, though. It just feels very un-Treasure-like, although you can still see their style slip through from time to time. But to me it feels very European.

I remember loading up PSII with a few tweaks, yeah. I think a faster run on the overworld, removal of the red flashing during battles (seemed seriously obnoxious), and some exp balancing that "makes it more like PSIV". I think it'll be a good time this way hopefully and less grindy.
All I really know beyond that is that I think PSII is the most sci-fi one of them all. Which sounds awesome.
I beat PSI via the Sega Ages version on Switch a year back or so, it was cool. I'll definitely give PSIII a fair shot someday too.
