SargeI played through Legend on PC myself. I remember it looking really good and running well too. Crystal Dynamics had their act together with that one. - I may start chipping at Soul Blazer tonight. I've got it loaded on my phone along with four other games I'm interested in for this theme. Soul Blazer is the longest though, that's why I'm doing it first.

The nice thing about Soul Blazer is that it really never slows down. That gameplay loop is really addictive, since you're constantly unlocking new stuff.

Ex Before July ends I’ll try Mega Man 2 on “difficult” rather than “normal”. I've only beaten once in my life on "normal" so I guess that counts? Oh snap I had no idea it could do that. That’s really cool!

I put an hour and a half into Soul Blazer tonight. I can safely say that 21 years later, this game lives up to my nostalgic memories of it. Pure prime '90s Japanese action-RPG bliss. I love this game's crisp graphics, its no nonsense approach to everything, such tight gameplay, and oh yeah that OST. I love this track: And howabout the insane palette cycling effects on the water all up in this first level: As for the fan translation I'm using, hits and misses. Overall the translation seems to have better clarity. But it's rife with misspellings and grammatical errors. It also occasionally causes a black square to appear on the screen, that only goes away if you go into your equipment menu. Oh well, not every hacker can match AGTP's quality. I think the official translation is probably better honestly, but I'll stick with the fan trans for difference's sake.

I don't recall the official translation being bad nor great. Illusion of Gaia on the other hand, the story/characters were atrocious, so maybe the translation was really bad for that one. I think I've heard the original scrip itself might just be weird though.

I think I've heard the original scrip itself might just be weird though. You can usually tell whether it's a bad translation or the writing was just bad to begin with. Or both. Unless the localization team literally just discarded the script and wrote a new one, or added a bunch of bullshit on top like a certain infamous fan-translation group, a bad translation doesn't fundamentally change the story. It can definitely ruin characterization, though. I'm pretty sure Illusion of Gaia is just the weak link in that trilogy.

I finished the first area and boss in Soul Blazer today, moved on over to the second area. I think I'm going to switch over to using the official translation though. Long story short; the fan translation is doing more harm than good. I don't recommend it. Edit: Well here's an example of why it pays to read the manual: The first time I played through Soul Blazer I had no idea you could do that. Although I will say this game's USA manual is super spoilery about world places you can go, and items/equipment you can get.

Well, I've been playing a different game than anticipated. It's Castlevania II: Simon's Quest. Believe it or not, despite really liking the game, I've only beaten it one time, and that's been years and years ago, in the early days of emulation. Probably was even using Nesticle. Anyway, I like a lot of the game... but a lot of the complaints about it are valid. Much like Dragon Scroll, another Konami game (that we didn't get in the West), the signposting is atrocious in spots. While that game was relatively fair in its clues for the most part, there was one really ridiculous place where I couldn't find a single clue pointing me to the sequence needed to proceed. Well, Simon's Quest arguably has three of those moments, although I might have missed the clues in the retranslation that I'm using. I've passed two of them (draining the lake, the whirlwind at Deborah Cliff), and have one left (you have to show Dracula's Heart to the ferryman to cross to a different place).
I'm not on pace for the best ending; in fact, I'm well past that. I think I'm going to get the crummy one where I didn't die enough, but took too long and Simon dies. Don't care, though; I got the better ending back in the day.
EDIT: I take it back; I definitely missed some clues. The US version wasn't great with some, but draining the lake was clear. It also says that Drac's Heart dispels the curse, but I think the reference to the river is only in the Japanese version. Whirlwind is still iffy for sure.

Guess the ending is time based like Metroid or something?
I've been thinking of hitting up a particular NES game myself that I don't think I've played in about 25 years. I bet nobody will guess it and I'll leave you guys hanging to guess tonight...
