Missed this post. Bit of a weird opinion piece (along with questionable comments haha)... but I guess maybe there's some truth to this. Still a strange divide between Sega of America and Japan. I wager we'll see another 2D Sonic someday but yeah, it's utterly criminal we didn't get a quick follow up to Mania that was all new levels*. I'll be pretty disappointed when we finally get a new one and inevitably see it go back to a 2.5D style or something. Mania looks like it would have been a 2D Sonic on the Saturn in such an awesome way, it's a gorgeous game.
* To be clear I have no issue with Mania being like half remixes of classic stages and often, the Act 2 stage will throw in a new twist and with music changes too. Either way Mania is like a perfect "Best Of" 2D Sonic and I could see how some fans, thinking myself here even, might consider it the best Sonic game ever. And since it sold well and was so acclaimed it should have been the easiest decision ever... okay, let's do this again but this time with all 100% new levels! Sigh...

Wanted to mention this one flew under my radar and looks really cool. Straight up Super Mario 3D Land/World love here:

"Netflix Launches Into Video Games for Android With Titles Including `Stranger Things '"www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-11-02/netflix-launches-foray-into-video-games-with-titles-for-android- "Sega and Microsoft announce strategic alliance to develop ‘Super Game’ initiative on Azure"The Japanese video game company Sega announced Monday that it plans to “explore a strategic alliance” with Microsoft, which will see Sega build new games and overhaul its development process via Microsoft’s Azure platform. With IP utilization as one of the Super Game’s hallmarks, it suggests that Sega plans to turn one of its tentpole franchises — the same financial report mentioned Phantasy Star Online, Sonic the Hedgehog, Persona, Yakuza, and Total War as potential candidates — to be made into a big-ticket service game. Whatever that ends up being, its development process will be powered by Microsoft Azure.www.geekwire.com/2021/sega-microsoft-announce-strategic-alliance-develop-super-game-initiative-azure/My guess is more Phantasy Star Online, would make sense as a cloud gaming service.

Here are some of the highlights from Famitsu‘s interview with Masahiro Sakurai: “I am not thinking of a sequel. I am not thinking of it every time. However, I can’t say with certainty that this would be the end of Smash.” “I need to think whether I must release a Smash game or not, even if I have to do something that would disappoint users.” “I currently don’t see a path where Smash can be produced without myself.” “Honestly, we did actually try leaving it to someone else, but it didn’t go well.” “If the series were to continue, I have to talk with Nintendo and have a debate on whether it will succeed or not. I must think about this topic seriously.”

Although I haven't liked the campaigns much in Smash since Melee, I don't even see a reason why another one should be made. Ultimate's roster is literally absurd and an interesting milestone in gaming history. Unless Nintendo has to keep some crazy licensing deals going for it, they could probably milk this game for a decade.
Haven't touched it since launch myself, but I have some friends wanting to do another party with it this month since all the DLC is out now. Which I don't buy for Nintendo stuff... so I get to just go over to their place and play all those new characters.
I won our last party/tournament with Ike.

The last Smash Bros. I played was Brawl for Wii. I played Brawl and Melee a tremendous amount with friends years ago. Since then I haven't touched the series. I've owned the Wii U and 3DS entries for years, still haven't booted either one. Haven't played the Switch release either.

Played tons of Brawl with friends myself. We all hated the stupid addition of "tripping" though. Sakurai and or Nintendo try to argue that Smash isn't supposed to be a serious competitive game... lol. They really hate the fighting scene for it from what I gather.
The best feature with Brawl was probably the level editor. We made a ton of weird levels and came up with our own ideas, like making some "enclosed" stages that boxed you in, but there would be a hole here or there to get knocked out. Put the damage percentage to max and it was crazy shenanigans. Sadly all these levels were made on the Wii or memory card stolen from me when I got scammed online, so they're nothing but memories now.
