IMario Sunshine got a few ho-hum reviews when it came out. Which isn't quite fair if you ask me.
Funny you should bring up Sunshine, as I’m actually running through that one again after not playing it since it’s initial release. I’ll probably wait until I finish it to give my thoughts on it, but right now I’m more on the ho-hum side of the spectrum.
I beat the entirety of Sunshine myself a good many years ago, but I remember a fair bit about it. I personally was not a fan of the F.L.U.D.D.-based stages. Running around virtually cleaning up muck is something Chibi-Robo should be doing, not Mario. I also did not at all care for the Yoshi-based stages. (The ones where you ride Yoshi.) That said there were some positives for me. I liked the tropical island setting, and the water effects were top notch. I super enjoyed the stages where you just play as Mario with no other gimmicks. Those Mario-only stages became quite challenging, and really tested one's 3D platforming mettle. But overall Sunshine's a 7/10 for me at best. It's got a lot of misguided design, which was unfortunately common for Nintendo during their GameCube years.
I've never actually sat down and played Mario 64 to completion in ages
I'm wayyy overdue for a replay of SM64. I have only played through its entirety a single time back in '97. I was excited when the DS version came out, but that excitement quickly diminished when I experienced how bad the DS version's controls are. I suppose my best bet personally nowadays is via the Wii's Virtual Console version, since I've already got the game in that capacity.
