So, after a long drought in adventure games, it seems that the genre has made quite the comeback. While Telltale's contributions to the genre often elicit scorn from traditional adventure game fans, there are some fun games there like Tales of Monkey Island (2009) or Strong Bad's Cool Game For Attractive People (2008). I know they have a lot more in their catalog, but I haven't finished those yet! I'm more here to mention a series of games that I found quite enjoyable, and that's the Blackwell series of games by Wadjet Eye. The first game also counts as retro, releasing back in 2006, and finishing up with Blackwell: Epiphany in 2014. Without getting heavily into the plot, you play the role of Rosangela Blackwell, a spirit medium, and her spirit guide, a sort of gumshoe-like ghost from the 1920s named Joey Mallone. As you can guess, lots of metaphysical hijinks abound, and I have to say that the plot weaves together pretty well through the games. The first game isn't as polished, but still solid, and they evolve quite nicely until the impressive last entry, which I wouldn't have batted an eye at if you'd told me it was one of the best from the DOS era. Anyway, who else has some modern (or modern-ish) adventure games that they'd recommend? I don't play them often, but I do get a hankering for 'em from time to time, so I definitely appreciate hearing about solid titles.

If you guys want a moody game for a night to check out this month, I recommend Near Death. Which I beat earlier this year. I played it randomly one cold night with headphones on in the dark and was totally submerged. Probably my favorite modern first person adventure game after SOMA.

I've been meaning to check out the Blackwell games for a long time. Pretty much all of Wadjet's catalog looks enticing. I've got all that stuff via GOG. Played any of it yet? Of course not! In the realm of modern adventure games that fit the horror theme, I can recommend a few I've personally beaten... Bulb Boy - Delightfully dark humor. The Lost Crown - Not quite modern, this came out in 2008, but still... easily the best horror adventure game I've ever played. Tormentium - Dark Sorrow - A fiercely unique trip through a surreal nightmare.
