I will give a hint as to what my first White Whale will be. It rhymes with "Mike Bison's Lunch-Out!!"
Heh heh, good luck with that one super sleuths.

Dang, I have no idea what that could be. Wait, I know! It's Wade Hixton's Counter Punch. In all seriousness, you might want to find a way to reduce input lag as much as possible. You've got a pretty decent rig, so you might even want to use the lag reduction feature in RetroArch.

In all seriousness, you might want to find a way to reduce input lag as much as possible. I know that using an LCD to play MTPO is asking for trouble, but I'm going take the AMOLED challenge. Worst comes to worst; I have an old CRT monitor to deal with troublesome refresh rates (imposing input lag) if needed.

Well, more emulation lag, too. The timing windows are ridiculously tight at the end. You don't feel it in most games, but this is one where those one or two frames definitely make a difference.

I’m pretty sure every game I’m planning to play this month actually fits this theme! Most of the games I hope to play this month are NES White Whales that I always meant to play/beat but never got around to. I’m hoping to finish Bionic Commando this week, actually. After that, I’m hoping to tackle Mr. Gimmick and Blaster Master, two other fairly big White Whales for me on the system. I do want to fit in the first two Castlevania games in the Igavania style, too. Circle of the Moon is the game that made me want a GBA. Theres also some White Whales that fit the first category, too - all of the NES Megaman games that aren’t 2 or 3. I’ve played them, but I’m fairly certain I never beat them. But I’d like to do a whole run through of the series again, so I probably won’t fit that in for this month. You maybe saw me championing Blaster Master in the Deju Vu thread... definitely one of my favorites, but tough as nails. I'm glad Sarge came around on it and might have some good tips for you since he just knocked it out again.
Circle of the Moon is still one of my favorite Igavania's and one I've played twice, second time on the Wii U. I feel like CoTM comes off like... what if an Igavania game had been made on the SNES or Genesis? To me this game both looks and feels different than all the others, rougher in a way, but I think that gives it its unique charm. From Harmony of Dissonance (my least favorite), Aria and on, they all start looking pretty much like SoTN remixes. Maybe it's just me though. I also think CoTM has some of the best music on the GBA.
MM1 is rough and one I didn't grow up playing since I never saw it as a rental, but I love 4-6! They're much easier than the earlier ones but yeah, still a blast if you like the formula. My favorite NES games of all time, I could play 100 NES Mega Man's and love them all.

I've started up The 7th Saga, but am already having some regrets about my choice of character. I typically always choose Lux as my main, but this time rolled with Olvan. He feels pretty fragile, especially here in the early going when the equipment isn't great. I'd also forgotten a couple of the "features" of the stat and battle systems. For instance, an attack boost only applies to core strength, not a weapon. That means Lux or Wilme benefit far more than Kamil or Olvan from said boost. I've also always wanted to use Wilme, as he feels closest to the martial artist archetype in Dragon Quest, but his magic growth clocks in at the lowest of all characters. This wouldn't seem to be an issue, until you realize that magic defense ties into the magic stat. So he gets pounded by magic, and on top of that, he never gets any equipment to deal with his innate weakness to ice attacks.
Equipment becomes problematic as well with Olvan. Keeping him outfitted costs a lot! Lux has virtually no equipment to speak of, and can tank hits a lot better. And his magic stat tracks with Kamil's or Olvan's! I mean, really, he's probably the best choice for melee in the game.
Not sure if I'll roll with Esuna or Valsu as my partner, but I'm also a bit tempted to start over and use one of those from the beginning. Then you can recruit one of the other characters in the late game and have them start at Elnard-level stats. I hear that Kamil in particular is a beast when recruited late.

I too would like to finally finish The 7th Saga, hell maybe I'll jump into it sometime this month. There is SO MUCH TREPIDATION when it comes to picking your starting character. I know exactly what you're talking about man. I know one thing for sure, you don't want this guy:
Lejes Rimul probably works fine as the main in Elnard, but in The 7th Saga... not so much.

Yeah, my understanding is that he's just too squishy. You'd have to pair him with another mage to make him worthwhile. Solo, as you attempted, is just asking for pain.
I forgot another plus for Lux: later in the game, he gets a massive stat boost from talking to a particular person. +30 HP/MP, and +20 to all other stats.
I'm pretty sure I have a save game somewhere with Lux that's about where I'm at now. I think it was done with the rebalanced version, but as long as it's under Level 10, it won't matter, because growth rates are the same until then.

Solo, as you attempted, is just asking for pain. Indeed, it was quite painful, and ultimately unsuccessful. I'm very tempted to restart The 7th Saga and finish it this month along with you. BUT I have to finish Nostalgia first! Not gonna juggle two JRPGs. (Already juggling a JRPG and WRPG.) Rooting for you man, The 7th Saga is something else.

I wish I still had my fairly advanced save game, but the battery died in my cart some time ago (or the save got lost on a failed boot, one).
EDIT: Turns out I did have a save on the cart which I dumped... which was with Olvan. Of course. Just barely ahead of where I'm at now, too.
EDIT 2: Started over, and already back where I was. Lux is currently decimating most enemies. Those Cyborgs are wrecking me, though; I just made a mad dash to Bonro. Now we'll see if I can get a partner.
