When I was eleven I owned Faxanadu, but I pronounced it "Fax-uh-nan-doh". I have no idea why. I had great game taste as a kid, but apparently my pronunciation skills were lacking.

To me, it's all about whether it's actually that portmanteau or not. If I find out it's not, I'll try to start changing how I say it. Wouldn't the first time I got a pronunciation wrong. Ninja Gay-den and Whys say hi! Yeah I had this happen another time when talking to a friend about Virtua Fighter. I wanted to pronounce Kage like "ka-geh" (陰) and my friend said, "Dude, it's 'cage'." XD

It is Ka-geh, though, isn't it? The Japanese word for "shadow". "Kagemaru" is a super common name for ninjas in Japanese fiction. Unless it's a bilingual pun.

Yeah, that's another one I would mess up. I'd call it "Legend of Cage" too. Ka-geh is correct, but I didn't learn about Japanese pronunciation for a while. Or Chinese, for that matter; I'm sure I butchered many a name in Destiny of an Emperor.

I think in the last 20 or 30 years people are more aware that media from Japan is a thing, so they're less inclined to Westernize it. Like people who don't even understand any Japanese, but they prefer subs over dubs (which I kinda thought was unusual). If Alisia Dragoon had come out this decade, I wonder if it the Japanese and overseas versions would have looked like this: To me the Japanese one looks like a badass manga, but the western one looks like it should be airbrushed on the side of a ride at the state fair. XD There were also a few videos from Game Sack lately where they were talking about playing SHMUPS in tall screen mode, or "tate" (縦) mode. They were pronouncing it "teight", but it's "ta-teh". Their viewers raised a fuss about it and they kind of went back and forth arguing about it for several videos. I kinda doubt anyone would have cared if the host of a TV show mispronounced that word back in the 80's or 90's.

Personally I don't mind when people mispronounce these things - I don't speak Japanese, and neither do they - but if it's pointed out to them and it's a factual matter, they might as well start saying it right. All the same, there's just too many things that can go wrong (and often do) with dubs, so subs all the way. I remember watching parts of the Fist of the North Star anime movie with both the dub and the subs, and some important backstory was flat-out missing in the dub, because it didn't fit with lip movement or they wanted to make room for some extra tough talk.
Back on topic, look how thoughtful she looks on the American cover. It's like she's posing for a statue.
