See, I didn't even know Falcom didn't have a hand in those PSP games. But yeah, I also think they'd be just fine as comfort food. They do indeed look more like 16-bit games than anything.

See, I didn't even know Falcom didn't have a hand in those PSP games. To be clear for our readers, the ones that Falcom did not develop for PSP are: The Legend of Heroes: A Tear of Vermillion The Legend of Heroes II: Prophecy of the Moonlight Witch The Legend of Heroes III: Song of the Ocean

Yeah, thanks for posting that. Very useful.
(I still own those, haha.)

Yeah, thanks for posting that. Very useful. (I still own those, haha.) My brain overflows with useless video game trivia. By the way: it's more that the games are practically a visual novel in RPG form. They're extremely wordy, and fairly well written and characterized, too. They're the very definition of a slow burn I have read Trails in the Sky characterized as the JRPG equivalent of Baldur's Gate II. Would you agree that is the case? And do you plan to play the sequels?

I've been meaning to get to Trails in the Sky Second Chapter for a while now. And... maybe? I don't know. There's a lot of little side quests to do, although they don't always give amazing rewards outside of fleshing out the characters more, which is its own reward. Combat isn't nearly as tactical. Honestly, I thought that was the weakest part of the game. I have the first two Cold Steel games as well, but haven't really given them much time (heck, my copy of CS2 is still sealed).
Trails in the Sky is on PC (and on GOG, even), so my advice to folks that aren't sure about it would be to download it somewhere and try it for a bit before buying, with the awareness that it might take a bit to "stick".

Falcom puts in the work. Sarge: I'd say of the two I own, Cold Steel interests me a bit more. Maybe the combat is better or something. But yeah... I've seen people dare to compare some of this series to Suikoden? That definitely sparked my interest more. Text heavy sounds great and yeah I've heard most of them are a slow burn, I'll have to make sure I'm in the mood for it when I try them out haha.

I have the first two Cold Steel games as well, but haven't really given them much time I also own those, but for Vita. Both are still sealed. Kind of irks me that part IV, which closes out the Cold Steel series, is still not localized. I was torn between the PSP and GOG versions, so of course I got both. I've got all three Sky PC games via GOG, and the first two on PSP as well. Now, it should be noted that the PC version are the original incarnation, and the PSP versions are ports. But, while the PC versions have greater fidelity, these kinds of games being almost visual novels, means playing them via a portable in bed (or a recliner) is pretty tempting. But it bugs me that the first two can be played in English on PSP, but not the third. Although the third was ported to PSP, just not localized by XSEED. Pretty much rambling at this point. It's a complicated series.

Wonder how it is? Never hear much about the DS one that got localized... Are you talking about Suikoden Tierkreis?
