Yep, I was responding to Xeogred 's post where he mentions Super Metroid and FFIII, two fantastic games. I definitely forgot about IoG (another fan, yay!), and at some point I need to play through the combined Sonic 3 & Knuckles... and this would be the month to do it. We'll see what I have in the tank after Jazz Jackrabbit. Aye, sorry about that. You sure are right. And re: IoG, you play Soul Blazer, too? I find that doesn't get enough love. I beat it once 10 years ago, yet that soundtrack is emblazoned in my ears still.

Yep, there's a lot of Soul Blazer fans here. The whole trilogy is great. EDIT: Thinking about the best year in the '80s. Guess I didn't get to that one when this came up last time! Let's see what I can come up with here. 1989 Ninja Gaiden The Guardian Legend Mega Man 2 Super Dodge Ball Dragon Warrior (okay, it didn't age well, but it was important) Faxanadu DuckTales Wonder Boy: Dragon's Trap Ghouls 'N Ghosts Revenge of Shinobi 1988 Contra RC Pro-Am Double Dragon Metal Gear Life Force Jackal SMB2 Blaster Master Bionic Commando Castlevania II Zelda II Phantasy Star 1987 Castlevania Kid Icarus Rygar Metroid Zelda Punch-Out!! Goonies II Mega Man This is actually a really tough call. I think I'm going to go with 1988, though. I hate missing Mega Man 2 and The Guardian Legend in particular, but I get Contra, Zelda II, Jackal, Blaster Master, Bionic Commando, Castlevania II, and SMB2 out of the mix, plus Ex 's favorite 8-bit RPG Phantasy Star.

Seeing it written out, I might lean more toward 1988, too. Very difficult to decide between 87 and 88.

Yeah, 1987 is fantastic, too, and might have more "important" titles. That Zelda/Metroid one-two punch is fierce, MTPO also, uh, packs a punch, and then you get Castlevania, which might actually be my favorite of the classic series. Honestly, all three of these years have standout titles, and I've probably forgotten some good games in each year as well.

Sarge One issue with it too is going by US v. Japanese release dates. Life Force came out in 1988 in the US, but Salamander, the same game, was 1987 in Japan. I own the Famicom cart, so which year do I choose? 1989 also saw the release of Gunhed/Blazing Lazers, Tetris, Super Mario Land, Star Soldier, SimCity, Revenge of Shinobi, Legendary Axe US, and Legendary Axe 2 JP. Honestly, 1987-1995 was the best era of gaming bar none. If I had to choose a 10 year period to keep with the rest gone, that would be it (with 1986 added in).

Heh, yeah, that makes it complicated. I go by US dates, since that's all had access to back in the day.
I'm not sure where I'd make my start date, but I'd probably try to slip 1997 in there, so that would give 1988 to 1997. Lots of great stuff during that run here in the States.

Do you use RFGen at all? I love that I can easily export the database, which I import into R to run stats on. Good stuff. But it also quickly orders the number of games I have per year. Granted, this is by release, so some might be skewed (like US v. JP release dates, though I tried to pick the earliest release date for the region regardless of variant), but as of now, in order, my years are:
1990 - 1991 - 1994 - 1992 - 1993 - 1989 - 1988 - 1995 - 2000 - 1997 - 1999 - 2001 - 1987 - 1982 - 1983 - 1986 - 1998 - 1996 - 1984 - 2005 - 2004 - 2002 - 2003 - 2007 - 2006 - 1980 (earliest year, 1 game, Space Invaders on the 2600) - 2013 (latest year, 1 game, Sturmwind on the Dreamcast) - 1985 (1 game, Root Beer Tapper on the ColecoVision).
The mean year is 1992. 1988 to 1995 form an unbroken chain of top years. That doesn't happen again until you get to the last year with 1985! And even that would mean excluding games from 2008-2012. (I could probably fill those gaps with some games on Steam and Android though.

I think I might have started to use it, but I haven't put together all my collection in any sort of database. I have a lot of my big-ticket items entered on PriceCharting, though.
