Yeah, I was using Double Dragon as a catch-all, I think all of them are worth playing. Even the brutally hard DD3. DD2 might be my favorite brawler on the system.
I thought of TMNT III as soon as I posted, and yeah, it's a huge improvement over TMNT II. Definitely worth a play.

The Death and Return of Superman is finished. Stage 7 and 10 were brutal. I ended up going back after save stating because I wanted a legit win. Turns out there are items hidden in the walls when you do the wall smash, which helps some. And that last stage sees fit to throw three enemies at you at once. Doesn't sound like much, but let me tell you, it ain't easy. I actually ended up getting to the last boss, messed up an input, and died with just one hit left to get on him. I had the same thing in Stage 7 (except not a boss, a single enemy left), so... yeah.
My strategy on Stage 10 changed, though, and I got to the end with two extra lives. The flying enemies can be baited into hitting their own guys, so I abused that, as it was safer than trying to get down and scuffle with the enemies on the ground, especially those blasted Manbots. They can reach out from distance and grab you, and there's no escaping it. They hit pretty darn hard, too. Felt good to get a legit win, though; it would have bugged me for a bit. But just a bit, 'cause I can't say I like this game much.
See, it's one thing if the game were just cheap (and it is), but the real problem is that there is no enemy stacking. None. At all. If you try to hit two enemies at once, you'll only actually hit one of them, leaving the other to whack you. It might be one of the most incredibly annoying things I've seen in a brawler. If it weren't for that, I'd actually say this was a solid game, but that one aspect drops it dangerously close to trash tier. I'm going to generously give the game a 4/10. And that's four hours of my life (or thereabouts) I won't be getting back...

Sarge Wait, an old-school beat-'em-up with 10 stages? Blizzard had no idea what they were doing, did they? I love beat-'em-ups, but nobody wants to play one for that long. If you're gonna have more than 6, maybe 7 well-paced levels, you need to have saves in there. Now that you've finished this and the Superman Genesis side-scroller, you might as well go for that infamously broken N64 game. You know, Maximum Carnage is actually good, if you wanted a licensed beat-em-up. It's just really hard. You better find every extra live in the game, especially early on.

Don't know if I ever really liked Maximum Carnage. I don't ever recall being able to get very far on it. Didn't it only give you like one life and little or no continues? I remember being able to get to some Venom levels at least. Hmmm, not sure. Haven't touched that one in decades probably. And yikes on The Death and Return of Superman, guess I'd stick to just replaying the awesome Batman Returns (SNES) instead of trying that one out. Another win for Batman. Blizzard did do some good back then though, I love The Lost Vikings.

Xeogred Like I said, you have to find the extra lives and extra credits in Maximum Carnage, because you get almost none at the start. They're hidden, but not that hard to find. In the first level, I think, there's one you can find by climbing on one of the walls and making your way up; there's another later on that you need to walk backwards a bit at the start of the level instead of walking forward as beat-'em-ups condition you to do. There's a fair amount of them. You also have to find the superhero summons which start to appear about midway through; those call on heroes like Felicia/The Black Cat, Iron Fist, Deathlok, and other obscure Marvel characters (like their Spawn ripoff, Nightwatch) to do some damage to enemies when you need them. They're very useful for the later part. There's a few other gameplay concept that you need to know about if you hope to beat it. More info here. It's the only western-made beat-'em-up from that period I really like, but yeah, it's less accessible then it should be. Separation Anxiety isn't as good, but it's not too bad either.

Yeah, the Spider-Man games are solid. I think I'd like it better than Supes, at any rate.
Not sure I ever want to touch Superman 64. Just what I've seen from some speedruns and such... not good.
I've also played a little bit of Batman: The Animated Series on Game Boy. Sunsoft bowed out and Konami stepped in. You can kinda tell, because a lot of the game also feels a bit like TMNT III: The Radical Rescue, at least from a play control standpoint. It's also very hard. You basically get three lives (actually two continues), and you're done. I bowed out at the end of stage 2.

Just gonna throw this out there as an "excellent superhero beat 'em up" that Ex recommends: I didn't play anything last night due to being physically wiped out. A pecan tree fell over in my mother-in-law's yard, so my wife, daughter, and I spent about four hours clearing it off. Running a big ass chainsaw and moving logs around in 96F heat left me too depleted for vidja. I'm hoping later this afternoon to start playing something though. I'd like to beat at least three games for this theme, maybe more.

Yes. Capcom had those brawlers nailed down during that period, and The Punisher is one of those really good ones.
And yeah, this heat is brutal, man. I've stayed indoors as much as possible.

this heat is brutal, man. I've stayed indoors as much as possible. Here's what we've got to look forward to this weekend in middle Georgia: Guess that's a valid excuse to stay indoors and play games through right?
