Never heard of that one! I must say, if you look up arcade flyer artwork for Muchi Muchi Pork!... it's uh, interesting. I'm not the biggest Cave fan out there, mainly because they tend to focus on "bullet hell" style shmups. I'm personally not all that fond of bullet hell design. I like the more traditional shmup format preceding that seachange. Don't get me wrong though, I know Cave has made some high quality shmups. Sky Shark | 1941: Counter Attack Nice job getting the ball rolling. And those were some solid classic picks. I plan to "beat" arcade shmups this month during my downtime at work, via MAME. I can usually credit feed through them in 20-45 minutes, depending on the game. Next week I should be able to knock out a couple for starters. Not sure what yet. I figured I'd open up MAME and sort the shmup column by year, and go for good looking '90s shmups I've never played. Although at some point, I need to hit up the true classics like R-Type and Gradius and finish those for scholarly points.

I figured I should actually finish R-Type III. It was pretty fun, a creative and technically impressive game with some rough spots. No 1CC because it's legitimately really hard, and I'd rather put that time elsewhere. Went with the good old unlimited continues. Stage 3 has this really dumb lava part that you have to play through twice for some reason, and Stage 6 has these "speedups" that can make you suicide. Both were really annoying, but not quite dealbreakers. I would also say the difficulty is all over the place. For example, the bosses in the middle of the game took me several tries, but the last boss took me like 3 lol. Nothing else seemed like too much of a big deal. Think I'd give it about a 4 out of 5.
One thing I have to ask is this: how is everyone playing these games? I'm playing on a low lag, 42 inch TV directly hooked up to my PC. Sometimes I use a portable arcade stick, but I mostly use a PS4 controller. Playing on a much larger screen was a serious eye opener. Forget the lag, how are you supposed to dodge anything when you can't see lol.

I'm using a 50" low lag TV myself (around 25 ms) hooked to my laptop. I also use an Afterglow 360 controller. I've got a Brawl Stick that perhaps I could break out to feel more official.

Sarge : Do you prefer those WW1-2 shooters to the sci-fi theme?
Jameson : Did you use save states or what? You make getting through R-Type III sound so casual, lmao. I agree the level where you have to go through it backwards again was super annoying. Maybe we just have different skillsets in shmups, I find R-Type's checkpoint system to drive me mad after awhile.
I just emulate/MAME on my LCD monitor with a Buffalo SNES controller. Nothing too fancy... wouldn't mind getting an arcade stick at some point.

I'm around 17 ms I think. It didn't hit me until the last year or so how much I was shooting myself in the foot playing on smaller PC screens. I've scored some 1CC's that way, but I can't imagine how much easier they would have been if I played on a bigger screen. Plus I can enjoy the sweet grafx more at this size.

Just knocked out 1994's RayForce (Japan arcade) AKA Layer Section (Japan home) AKA Galactic Attack (NA/EU) AKA Gunlock (EU arcade) ... um yep.
28 minutes, 15 credits.
Aesthetically this game is a real treat, love the graphics and music as always with a lot of mid 90's arcade games. This is a pretty standard shmup that starts off really easy and ramps up along the way with some bullet hell bosses, but it was never anything too crazy. The gimmick here is the lock on system being able to track "lower" targets. I'm not a huge fan of this in shmups, but it wasn't too bad here. Things just get a bit chaotic as it gets further in, naturally...
Can't emphasis enough, I just really love the look and vibes here.

Sarge : Do you prefer those WW1-2 shooters to the sci-fi theme? I do like them, but I also like the sci-fi stuff. They were just the first things that came to mind for nostalgic reasons. The local(ish) Pizza Hut had a 1942 cabinet that I got to play once, and I had the NES version of 1943, which is pretty aces. I also dug that 194X one I mentioned on the CPS-1 hardware, so it made sense to play another in the series. As for the other, I'm not entirely sure it was Sky Shark that I actually played that time. I thought there was more jungle to start off? I barely even remember where it was at this point; some kind of campground or something? Regardless, I dig vertical shooters, so on the list it went. Technically, the scrolling direction shouldn't matter all that much; in fact, I'd argue it might be more optimal these days for horizontal given the aspect ratio of today's screens. But I've just always preferred the vertical orientation. Also, I dig the Ray series. I think Panzer Dragoon has conditioned me to enjoy lock-on stuff in games. I also remember playing a demo of Raystorm on PSX; really cool stuff there! Jameson : Yeah, bigger screens definitely help! Especially the games with vertical orientation, since you're already losing so much to the mismatched aspect ratio. I bought this TV because I got tired of squinting at my 32" set playing Xenoblade Chronicles X... I've noticed there are other screens out there that have even better response times now. I've seen a few rated on RTINGS.com that actually slide in under 11 ms, which is pretty impressive. I don't think there were many approaching that number when I bought this one; it's a 2015 model (JU6500). I worked through a ton of issues with it, but think they're all sorted now. There's so much Samsung just doesn't tell you in their documentation on how to set things up optimally. Like avoiding overscan by changing the label to "PC" on an input, or bringing Sharpness down to 0 to disable it (much cleaner image that way), or pulling the TV out of "quick start" mode to avoid some screen blanking out issues I was having... although I think it may have been one of the last firmware updates that truly fixed it. Either way, it hasn't come back in a couple of years, so yay! I'm actually quite tempted to buy another TV at Black Friday this year to put in my room. I've gotten into a habit of watching a lot of TV before bed; it helps me wind down a lot more than games.

One thing I have to ask is this: how is everyone playing these games? I usually emulate games on my work laptop, using a Buffalo SNES controller. Sometimes I'll emulate them on my smartphone, in tandem with a clip-on Bluetooth controller. Both approaches are merely out of convenience. If I wanted to play on a big screen, I've got a 65-Inch 4K Ultra HDTV in the living room, which I could hook up a mini-PC, in tandem with wireless controllers. But I don't much feel the gumption for all that.

I've dabbled into RayCrisis so far and it's seriously really cool stuff. For some reason it makes me think it's what Star Fox could have been if it were a more traditional shooter... it might just be the blocky polygonal tech look.
On another very random TV note, my old roommate texted me the other day and noticed his new TV has no AV/component input at all. So... be weary of that, I guess they're phasing even component out now!
