Feeling a bit tired tonight, daylight savings must be messing with me. So I didn't play anything new but just did another run on DonPachi. I realized there's two ways you can use bombs, without holding fire down you do a normal screen clearing attack, but if you're holding fire down you'll do a super duper mega beam attack that can obliterate bosses.
Also interesting that this doesn't have any dip switches? I was going to see if I could change any potential internal difficulty levels, but no go.

Okay, now I'm really interested in playing that for this month. Mine isn't nearly as weird; I burned through Battle Garegga just now. Took a little over 30 minutes, and like 17 continues... so about the same number of lives as Xeogred . I think my biggest gripe about the game, outside of bullets that are too fast to dodge unless you know what's going to happen, are that the bullet colors are quite dull, with several dull gunmetal and bronze colored shots that are tiny to boot. They kill you just the same as the big stuff, though. I also didn't discover I could fiddle with the direction of my option planes until like Stage 5, so there's that. I'd probably give this a 6.5/10. I liked it, and in several spots it actually feels surprisingly fair, despite the difficulty I had at times parsing incoming fire. I don't know how hard this is considered within the community, but I feel like a reasonable amount of practice could yield a 1CC. Then again, that last boss...

From the little I've gathered, Battle Garegga has a tough reputation. I agree the bullet/projectile colors are a bit unfair. I didn't have that problem as much with those others I played that are similar in style. I love how Cave just sticks to one color... (though I recall Mushihimesama Futari having more colors and stuff going on than the first). I wonder if it's a trend with all their stuff, or just how DonPachi and Mushi 1 work. I stumbled upon this RB article the other day which was cool to check out and why I played some of the titles I did. The author "BulletMagnet" doesn't ring a bell though. I was surprised to even see an author credited, since that doesn't always happen with RB articles... www.racketboy.com/retro/the-best-shmups-to-get-startedAlso discovered this YT channel with a lot of runs, it's cool to just look at how awesome a lot of these games looked visually. www.youtube.com/channel/UCS7wF9rD2H9nsU-MX68iuNg/videos

YES. Thunder Force IV is god-like. I beat it in 2018. This one has really interested me. I used to own a copy on Gamecube, but the disc was damaged and wouldn’t go any farther than the start menu. Now I have it on steam, but for some reason I feel like I would prefer to play it on home console. I beat this in… 2016 I think? I used a bajlilion credits though. I ought to replay it because I didn't know you could use your laser-windshield-wipers to sweep up enemy bullets. So I just died and died and died and ultimately brute forced my way through the game. The graphics were amazing for a Saturn game but it felt really bullet hell-y. Is this related to Fire Shark for the Sega Genesis? (Same Same Same [さめ さめ さめ] for the Mega Drive) Oh snap, I thought the video you posted looked like Layer Section. I didn’t read your entire comment at first and just thought it was a different game called RayForce. I tried beating this on the Saturn a few years ago but wasn’t successful. It was a little frustrating but the 3D camera angles were really cool. I want to beat this one on Sega Saturn! This one too… Also this one. 6/10 for Gun.Smoke is fair. I felt like it was just good enough to be acceptable but not much more than that. ShakeWell OK what the hell is that game and why haven't I heard of it? It looks like Princess Tomato in the Vegetable Kingdom: the Shmup.

I feel like the "aregetting" might be an artistic choice because it's immediately followed by "too close".

anayo : Yeah, Fire Shark is the sequel to (or at least adjacent to) Sky Shark. I might give it a go for this month as well.

45. Gunlock/RayForce (Arcade) 46. Battle Garegga (Arcade) 47. Armed Police Batrider (Arcade) 48. Batsugun Special Version (Arcade) 49. Battle Bakraid (Arcade) 50. DonPachi (Arcade) 51. DoDonPachi (Arcade)
8 credits, 27 minutes.
DoDonPachi is easily the best shmup I've played so far and a nice upgrade to the first game. You've got some blue enemy fire mixed in with the pink now, but it's easy to track both. This is definitely bullet hell territory but it's just so freaking fun. For 1997, it even feels way better than some I've played that came out years after this. A nice upgrade over the first game is there's boss health bars now. I prefer when these have those. The music didn't stand out much in the first either but was serviceable, here it's nonstop rocking guitar solos and leads that sound like the guitar sample straight out of Symphony of the Night (think the boss battles and such), loved it! There's also the star pickups now from enemies for extra scoring.
I actually thing I like the green second ship a lot in these so far. Kind of an interesting middle point between Red's brute force firepower but narrow coverage and Blue's wide spread shot... Green's a little bit of both.
Sarge my man, if you're a fan of this game, you gotta play Mushihimesama. Replace all things sci-fi here with Nausica and you've got Mushi!
I guess the font was hard-coded and not easy to change, or something?
