The best way to play Mega Man X4 is with Zero. Seriously, I had an absolute blast.

I almost slip into a coma with Zero in X4-X5... it's SO easy with him! I guess some people have a trickier time with him since he lacks range, but his saber and special moves obliterate everything and the bosses. Especially that mid air spinning sword stuff! And a double jump! It's still freaking fun though. I think they did a great job working around a melee player character with the Zero games.

That's the fun. He's really overpowered if you know what you're doing. I love it.
Anyway, I have beaten Mega Man X2!
Quick thoughts: I like it, but it doesn't have anything on the superlative Mega Man X. There are bits that channel the magic, but the X-Hunter stages in particular felt a little dull despite some tricky bits (that stupid moving platform and the second X-Hunter with all the cannons, grrr). You're right about the upgraded Buster; it's a little weird to get used to, as it throws off the normal rhythm. Especially if you don't let off the button after the first shot, you can get hit when that second shot pops off. It is, however, incredibly powerful, and it allowed me to decimate the boss refights. As far as I can tell, they don't really get any extra invincibility frames from it, so you can just unload it in their face and it will still register the hits.
Finding all the stuff took up most of my time; understanding how a few charged weapons work was needed. One was obvious (Speed Burner), one not as much (the bubble shot that lets you jump off water to get a Sub Tank in the Bubble Crab stage). I'd say I probably spent six hours total on the game. Funnily enough, I'd taken out most of the bosses pretty quickly; they were rarely the problem, even with no Sub Tanks and only one Heart Tank for most of the game.
Graphically, the game looks nice enough, although I don't think it matches some of Capcom's best work. I'm not sure what I would consider their best work, but as far as cohesive, legitimately amazing graphics go, Demon's Crest easily ranks among their best on the system, and I never felt wowed like I did in that game. A few iconic tunes, although much like the Genesis remix of MMX's tunes, I wonder how these would fare with that treatment?
Guess it's rating time. I still think it's good, but I hesistate to call it great, so I'll peg it in the middle and give it a 7.5/10. Certainly a game worthy of Mega Man fans' time, but it won't convert anyone outside the faithful.

Hope you hit up X3 next. I seemed to enjoy that one a little more last year. X is definitely king though, only thing I'd change about that one is starting off with the dash ability like the rest of the series does. Feels a bit odd for that stage and half without it, heh.
Ever played the Xtreme games? This remix of the X2 intro stage theme is amazing:

Nice job Sarge, knocking out an old SNES classic. Do you think MMX2 was more or less difficult than MMX1? - It's strange that by now I've only beaten the first MMX. I received it as a (requested) birthday gift the same year it released, so March of 1994 when I turned 15 years old. I remember my dad balked at how expensive the game was (about $70 in today's money), and wanted to buy me a cheap mountain bike instead. I remember telling him I'd rather kill robots then ride a Walmart bike around the farm. Anyway I absolutely loved the first MMX, blew me away. I remember being very elated when I beat it (don't recall how long that took) - but then never playing it again. Sometime after that I recall renting MMX2 but not liking it as much. And in 1998 I borrowed a copy of MMX3, got to the very end of the game, but didn't manage to beat that one either. The rest of the MMX games I've never even played. Probably because of how similar they all look to one another. I tend to value risky innovation over redundant consistency. That said, I'd probably enjoy going through these games more at this point in my life. Everything MMX4 and beyond is uncharted territory for me.

I think you'd dig MMX4, especially if you play as Zero. It completely changes the game.
It's really hard for me to gauge which I think is harder. I honestly think they're probably pretty similar. I was really good at MMX back in the day; I got to Sigma on a rental at a friend's house, and would have beaten it if I hadn't had to leave. You're likely to take some deaths before you get the patterns, but really, other than a few sticking points where you want some Sub Tanks (that second X-Hunter boss), you'll likely breeze through.
Heck, come to think of it, Sigma's final form was really easy. He was only doing one damage per hit, and he spawns enemies that can drop health items. So strange for a last battle.

I think X1 is super easy but yeah, X2's final Sigma is a joke. He's brutal again in X3 and most of the others though. Ex : For all your talk of liking hard games, it's time to work your way up to the majesty that is...
Here were my 2018 replay thoughts, I loved it. Most don't ... I made sure to bookmark this post for laughs.

I did play a bit of MMX3 last night. Took down Gravity Beetle right off, although I died to him three times before getting him. Something about his shot took off variable life, but most of the time, it was whacking half my dang health. Then I took on Toxic Seahorse, got to him on that single life left, but lost with about a third of his health left. At least I snagged my first Heart Tank.

Alrighty, Mega Man X3 is down. I think I liked it a bit more than X2, but the Doppler stages bring it down. Sigma is a tough one this time, and getting shots to connect are a giant pain; the battle is pretty dang fiddly. I found just the light charge to be the most effective.
Oh, and the Buster upgrade suuuuuuucks. It's so much worse than X2.
