Video Chess | Atari 2600 | 1979
I’m really glad you reviewed this because it’s a fascinating piece of software I wasn’t likely to ever try for myself. I probably have this on several of those Atari compilations but would always scoff at it. It’s fascinating to think about when this would have been a really desirable title to have. I imagine some guy excitedly carrying it home from Sears and earnestly waiting an hour a turn to compete against the machine. I also appreciate the details about using “venetian blinds” to sidestep sprite limitations and memory bank switching in an Atari cart.

anayoOf every video game I played in 2019, Video Chess impressed me the most. It really is AMAZING that a game with AI of that complexity could run in 4K on a peanut processor. Astounding programming. - I have presently been trying to beat The Chessmaster on NES lately. I've played about 10 games against it, and failed each time. I've been playing on a pretty high difficulty level though, might have to eat some pride and lower the AI a bit.
