January's Club Retro theme is PUZZLE GAMES.
We're not talking about adventure games where you solve puzzles, but instead games that are completely puzzle based. Think Puyo Puyo, Adventures of Lolo, Bust-a-Move, Tetris, or Sutte Hakkun. That sort of gameplay. Can your brain burn through the synapse searing perplexities of the past?

I was going to ask for recs, but Lolo definitely sparks some ideas. I'd also recommend Kickle Cubicle; it's a bit more arcade-y in spots, but there's still some serious puzzling action, too.

I just spent an hour scouring GameFAQs for candidates. I downloaded about 18 games to sample, all from varying platforms. I'll attempt to beat the truly good ones.

Do we have any Tetris masters around here? Even if not, a score attack might be fun. I'll admit I'm not amazing at it.
Actually, a score attack for anything off the beaten path might be interesting, too.

Tengen or Nintendo?

Nintendo, of course. You can start at the level you like, but in my experience it's easier to get a higher score if you start at level 9 then level 0. Alright, here's a first decent score:

Geeeeez, I think we found our Tetris expert. I don't think I'll ever hit that score. I only got 39,639, and I'm pretty sure I've only broken 100,000 once. EDIT: Yeah, I'm calling it now. I'm not going to be able to beat that score; I can barely keep up on Level 9 if I try to go for Tetrises. Even then, I tend to screw up a placement because I can't get the piece where I want in time. I'm still going to call this "beaten", though, because I topped the high score list.

Any other puzzle game you'd like to go for score on? Preferably something classic. Tetris is the only one I've played a lot of (aside from the Brain Age version of Dr. Mario).
