Eternal Legend is the last untranslated Game Gear turn-based RPG (in the non-turn-based category, there's also Ninku, which is some kind of RPG/VS fighter hybrid that seems pretty cool). I'm curious where you heard it was the best GG RPG, though? It's always seemed kind of bad to me, and it's got a terrible average on Gamefaqs (2/5), though of course that might just amount to a handful of people who don't speak Japanese. But the graphics remind me of Phantasy Star Gaiden, which is terrible, the music is really bad, and it was made by Japan Art Media, who made that awful DS Lunar game and the awful GBA remake of Lunar Silver Star, so...
I wonder if that action adventure game you're playing is Tails Adventure? I've heard good things about it, and I can't think of too many other GG games that fit that description (unless it's that Wonderboy game, but then you'd probably rather play it on the Master System). Unless you count Jurassic Park: The Lost World, maybe?
As for me, I've still got GG Aleste 2 lined up, but after that I'm afraid I've pretty much played everything I might like on the system. I tried to count every Game Gear game I've finished and I got to 19, so with GGA2 that'll be a nice round 20. Ristar and some of the Sonic games look like well-made games, but regular platformers just don't do it for me. I'd like to find another game or two, though...

IIRC I read praise for it back on RHDN at one point, also GameFAQs says this: That's just what GameFAQs says. I am not saying that I personally agree with that list. You guessed it! I put more time into Tails Adventure tonight. I'd wager I'm about 75% of the way through now. I've got about three and a half hours in it presently. I'm hoping it's a ~5 hour long affair. Well, I'd be surprised if you didn't at least somewhat enjoy that one! Maybe you'd like one of these next? (I apologize if you've already played and I missed earlier): Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story (platformer with melee attacks) Fray: Shugyouhen (GG exclusive cute 'em up <-I beat this years ago, enjoyed) Ninku (GG exclusive JRPG w/ 2D fighter combat?! maybe use a walkthrough) Ninku 2: Tenkuuryuu e no Michi (GG exclusive fighter) SD Gundam: Winner's History (GG exclusive, action-strategy) Yuu Yuu Hakusho (looks like a beat 'em up with some platforming?) Yuu Yuu Hakusho II: Gekitou! Nanakyou no Tatakai (GG exclusive cinematic fighter) (Also: If Sarge is still in the mood for overhead action-puzzlers he might like Ninku Gaiden: Hiroyuki Daikatsugeki or Slider.) I've still got quite a few GG games I plan to try out. I have sampled a lot more than I've talked about, just didn't bother to mention any stuff I only played for five minutes. My original goal was to beat at least 5 GG games for this theme, and I'm almost at 4 beaten already. I may end up exceeding that goal. I'm enjoying the GG quite a bit, I must say. I had access to a real GG back in the early '90s with a handful of games, but I hardly played the thing back then.
I wish that Torarete Tamaruka!? had an English fan translation, it looks really cool: gamefaqs.gamespot.com/gamegear/570347-torarete-tamaruka/images

The Top 10s are generated automatically based on clicks, posts on the dedicated message board, etc. GameFAQs users with time to waste like to get on boards for obscure games and post nonsense, so Eternal Legend is probably high on that top 10 because of this entirely pointless thread from last year. If you look at Eternal Eyes's home page, you'll see it has an average rating of 2.00 out of 5, with only 11 votes, making it one of the lowest-rated GG RPGs. It has no reviews, no cheats, no Q & A, and only one of those Ritchie FAQs from 2008. In other words, no sign that anyone actually cares about the game. I think I do vaguely remember someone on the romhacking board liking the game, for what it's worth. And yeah, unfortunately I'm already familiar with all those games. I finished both Yu Yu Hakusho games back when I was doing a HG101 feature about every YYH game ever last year (or was it 2018?). The first one is a beat-'em-up with semi turn-based boss battles. There's only a little bit of platforming in the final level, but it's not a problem. The game's pretty decent, though the final battle is some bullshit. YYH2 is a simplified take on the SNES "visual battle" YYH games, or a slightly more complex version of the first game's boss battles. It's not bad, but it's just a few quick duels, so there's not much to it. I hate Fray. It's as brutally choppy as the MSX game that inspired it; it's like they decided that was a feature of the game instead of a result of running on a computer that couldn't handle animation and scrolling. The PCE-CD version of Fray Gaiden looks like it could be great, though. It's more of a ARPG/shooter hybrid.

It's more intuitive to imagine the Top 10 would be generated based on aggregates of user ratings per game per platform. Regardless, I wasn't inferring that I personally believed Eternal Legend is a great JRPG by any means. I've never played it; I'll take your opinion to heart that it's mediocre. That would explain why this JRPG remains un-fan translated to this day.

You can sort by review scores if you go to a game's summary page. It tells you what rank it is among its genre and for the entire library. I've used that a decent amount over the years, although scores might be a little skewed on some games since there aren't many reviewers. I think the default is 5+ votes.

Well using that method this is what we get:

The fact that that so-so Lunar gaiden is there but Defenders isn't makes me just makes me disregard this list completely.

I think that's what I was talking about with limited numbers of reviews. Defenders should absolutely be higher.

I think that's what I was talking about with limited numbers of reviews. Defenders should absolutely be higher. Upping the number of minimum votes to the next tier (50) this is what we get: EDIT: IGNORE THIS LIST I SORTED IT WRONG!The fact that that so-so Lunar gaiden is there but Defenders isn't makes me just makes me disregard this list completely. Using a minimum votes of 50, Defenders of Oasis shows up at number 27. What the highest voted games say to me, is people are basing their opinions off the popularity of pre-existing game series. Meaning that newcomers to GG are going to naturally gravitate to franchises they are already familiar with.

Ex True, and this is the same phenomenon Sarge was talking about regarding the top ten lists. It's fitting that GG Shinobi 2 is right after Defenders, I guess, because that's also one of the best games on the system.
