Well, I went back to GG Aleste 2. It finally just clicked and whatever was bothering me before went away. I think it might just be because I finally had some decent sleep so I was a bit sharper. Anyway, I still don't like it quite as much as the first game, for some of the reasons I mentioned before - Aleste games usually have tons of weapons types, but this one has only four, and I hate two of those (the shield and the worthless homing missiles). Also it's shorter and the epic feel of that big multi-floor spaceship at the end of the first is missing. But all that aside, it's a good game. For some reason I got caught up in the idea of finishing the game on a single life, which I haven't accomplished yet (made it to level 5 out of 6 before I died), but I did finish the game. I'd give it a 7. It's clearly one of those games that feels like it would fit on a console, unlike a lot of handheld games.
I doubt I'll finish any other at this point, as there's nothing left on my list. There are the GG games I beat for this theme, in order of preference:
Moldorian GG Aleste GG Aleste 2 Kenyuu Yaiba Densetsu Tempo Jr.

I think I'm running outside of obvious ones to play through as I've definitely sampled a lot more than I've mentioned. Probably the big ones are the time sinks (relatively speaking) of Moldorian, Royal Stone, and Shining Force: Final Conflict. I do think if I'm going to dive into one, though, I'd probably like Final Conflict the best.

Yeah the well runs dry soon enough when we're just focusing on the decent-to-great action games on this handheld. The GG doesn't have quite the legs on that front that the GB does. That said, I still plan to try to finish these this week:
Kishin Douji Zenki Ristar Tails Sky Patrol
That'll be it for me and action games on the GG though. There are other games I'm interested in on GG, but they are all RPG and strategy stuff. Which take a lot longer to finish obviously. Maybe we'll have an 8-bit handheld RPG month sometime for Club Retro!

I wouldn't mind an 8-bit RPG month in general, actually. I know they tend to get overlooked for the mostly-better 16-bit generation, but there are still some absolute classics that are worth playing today.

Though there are so many of them to choose from, we might have to have a month dedicated to the idea more than once.

Ex: True, especially since RPGs take a good bit longer to finish. That being said, I hope some folks consider a few 8-bit action-RPGs for April's theme.

I put about an hour into Kishin Douji Zenki last night. I was really liking it, up to the point you get sent back to previous levels to collect five hidden elemental orbs. Artificial longevity contrivances like that are a pet peeve of mine in gaming (one of the reasons I don't love Terranigma). That said, I've collected three of those orbs so far, working on the rest now. I do plan to finish the game, and overall it's been an impressive GG platformer.

Artificial longevity contrivances like that are a pet peeve of mine in gaming. But you didn't mind it in Tails Adventure? Or basically every "Metroidvania" ever? To me that part was an occasion to visit those levels with a different character, since I always play as Zenki, and obtain a few items I couldn't get before along the way. There's even a few alternate routes.

That's how I felt about it, too. It might not be as exploratory as a true "Metroidvania", but it does give you a reason to poke around in the stage more deeply. It's MV-lite, in my eyes, and I appreciated the added depth, small though it was, along with those alternate routes leading to life upgrades.
Of course, the other side of the coin is that the five items here don't actually bestow any extra capability, so they differ from the "Metroidvania" formula in that respect.

But you didn't mind it in Tails Adventure? Or basically every "Metroidvania" ever? False equivalency. The game in question is not a metroidvania at all. It's closer to SMB3 or SMW concerning means of progression. the five items here don't actually bestow any extra capability Bingo. These are not new items, but rather glorified keys to open a sudden gate out of nowhere. I hate that kind of game design. It made me stop playing Super Princess Peach, made me stop playing Metroid Prime 2, made me stop playing Terranigma. But this game is so short I'll look past the matter and finish it.
